There is a national epidemic of police violence, and we are just beginning to understand its scale. In recent months, there has been a constant drumbeat of high-profile police killings.

On December 20 the NAACP Legal Fund issued a press release saying the execution of NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos show “the need for sensible gun control.” According to the release, we need also “need to thoughtfully address untreated mental illness.” One thing the NAACP Legal Fund’s release said we don’t need to do is to “suggest a causal link between between these killings and the recent protests and activism focused on the serious issue of police violence against unarmed African Americans.” They suggest that pushing such a “causal link” may escalate “an already tense state through rumor...

Former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner had tremendous appreciation for the the men and women who serve as New York City firefighters, cops and Port Authority members.. It's why he started the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation, which for nearly 32 years has provided for the education of children whose parents were killed in the line of duty. The New York Daily News reports that Steinbrenner's foundation will provide the money needed to support the education of both of Ramos' sons. "Who's going to take care of these kids," Steinbrenner asked his friend, former Olympian Jim Fuchs, who would run the foundation...

Jazz already wrote the definitive take on the grisly execution-style shooting of two New York City police officers and the role that irresponsible commentary from elected leaders – particularly Mayor Bill de Blasio – might have played in that attack. Jazz is right to question the part that the mayor’s self-indulgent and unhelpful rhetoric might have played in this incident. Hours after a Staten Island grand jury’s decision to issue no-bill for the death of Eric Garner, de Blasio went on an ill-advised tear in which he impeached the NYPD based solely on his prejudices. “That should never have to...

Before the Jets-Patriots game on Sunday, Jets Nick Mangold was seen wearing an NYPD hat in honor of the two NYPD police officers who were tragically killed on Saturday.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is hearing it from all sides today as he pays the consequences for his ill considered remarks following the failure of a grand jury to indict a police officer in the death of Eric Garner. De Blasio enraged police when he told a crowd of supporters in Staten Island earlier this month that he feared for his bi-racial son’s safety when dealing with the police: Chirlane and I have had to talk to Dante for years about the danger that he may face … how to take special care in any encounters he...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK) The ambush killing of two New York police officers on Saturday has forced a burgeoning protest movement against police violence to address accusations that it bears some responsibility for violence carried out in the name of that cause. Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were fatally shot Saturday as they sat in their patrol car in a Brooklyn neighborhood. The suspect, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, is thought to have posted threats against police on social media before shooting his ex-girlfriend in Baltimore and then traveling to New York to target the officers. He killed himself moments after attacking the officers....

Ron and Rand Paul have complained about being wrongly dubbed “isolationists†even though that name arguably fits whatever passes for their foreign policy. Now Rand Paul has decided that opponents of bailing out the Castro regime are isolationists. All this proves is that Rand Paul doesn’t know what an isolationist is.“I think a policy of isolationism toward Cuba is misplaced and hasn’t worked,†Paul writes in Time Magazine.Isolationism is a policy that the United States would adopt toward the larger world. An embargo on an enemy state in response to its actions against the United States is not isolationism.Rand Paul is...

Recently, professional athletes have made their feelings known about the protests sweeping the country over grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.Four members of the St. Louis Rams ran on to the field with their hands up, indicating their solidarity with protestors advancing the myth that Michael Brown died while surrendering. NBA players Derrickk Rose and LeBron James both wore “I can’t breathe†T-shirts during warm ups before recent games.Whether intended or not, the protests cast blame upon the police, and caused much anger in the ranks of officers.Now,...

Hours after two NYPD officers were shot and killed, Patrick J. Lynch, President of the New York City Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said there was "blood on many hands," including Mayor Bill de Blasio and people who have recently protested against police violence.

For months, ever since the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, the left has been rampaging against the police. They implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) urged violence, and maintained systemic police racism was the cause of disproportionate numbers of young black males arrested and convicted of crimes. The rest of us mostly remained silent as the men and women who wear blue as they protect us from the criminals who live among us were vilified. Now, two of them have been assassinated, and it is time to be silent no more. As a first step, wear something blue today. If...

I’m not going to beat around the bush here. It is time for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to resign. Yesterday’s assassination of two of New York City’s finest was only the latest and most devastating brush stroke on a canvas which has been coming into focus for months. When you are the mayor of a city you have many responsibilities, but one of the most vital (in terms of maintaining a functional societal structure) is the mandate to enforce the laws and maintain social order. It is the same for mayors everywhere, as well as governors...

My heart breaks for New York City tonight. NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu had their lives stolen from them. Ismaaiyl Brinsley allegedly approached their marked police car and opened fire before later turning the gun on himself. His Instagram account told the story: "I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs" - vengeance for the death of New York's Eric Garner, who died after an officer's use of an illegal chokehold. According to authorities, Brinsley shot and wounded his girlfriend earlier in the day. Clearly, Brinsley was a disturbed man....

It’s a dark time in America — a time when two uniformed officers who had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., or to Eric Garner on Staten Island, are executed without warning, and some witnesses actually say “They deserved it.†Again: “They deserved it.†They being two men marked for death because they wore a New York Police Department uniform. One of those men was the recently-married Officer Wenjian Liu; the other, Officer Rafael Ramos, who leaves behind a wife and 13-year-old son. In a related story, both were reassigned from an anti-terror...

WASHINGTON -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) blamed this weekend's killing of two NYPD officers on anti-police "propaganda," for which he said President Barack Obama bears some responsibility. "We've had four months of propaganda, starting with the president, that everybody should hate the police," said Giuliani during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday." "I don't care how you want to describe it -- that's what those protests are all about." Giuliani cited the nationwide protests against institutional racism and police brutality that followed the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York,...

Subway Manspreaders Told: Close Your Legs And Let Other People Ride Poster campaign will attempt to stop antisocial practice Doctors say crossing legs will not affect reproductive powers. Amanda Holpuch Saturday 20 December 2014 Comments As 2014 comes to an end, one thing New York commuters can expect in 2015 is an official city campaign against a growing problem: “manspreading”. Manspreading is the act or practice – typically male – of spreading one’s legs in a manner which prevents others from occupying nearby seats on the subway, commuter train or bus.
