What are the most (and least) honest cities in the world? Reader's Digest conducted a global, social experiment to find out.Now Trending1 / 18Kathrin HarmsKathrin HarmsOur reporters “lost” 192 wallets in cities around the world. In each, we put a name with a cellphone number, a family photo, coupons, and business cards, plus the equivalent of $50. We “dropped” 12 wallets in each of the 16 cities we selected, leaving them in parks, near shopping malls, and on sidewalks. Then we watched to see what would happen.2 / 18Lauri Rokto/City of Helsinki Tourist & Convention BureauMost honest: Helsinki, FinlandWallets returned: 11...

Rock icon Linda Ronstadt has maintained a low public profile since her diagnosis with a Parkinson’s-like degenerative disease more than 10 years ago, but she’s raising her voice once again to condemn Donald Trump and the “hate show” rally he intends to bring to the Tucson music venue named in the “You’re No Good” singer’s honor. The Trump rally is set for this afternoon in what the Republican candidate’s website calls The Tucson Music Hall. Only it hasn’t been called that since 2022, when the venue was officially renamed the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall. "Donald Trump is holding a rally...
  • China's banks have a nasty case of indigestion

HONG KONG, Sept 11 (Reuters Breakingviews) - China's financial sector has serious heartburn. For decades, Beijing has leaned on its state-controlled banks to turbo-charge growth by extending credit. But lenders are now clogged with risky assets. The result is something like indigestion: not critical, but painful for the $17 trillion economy. On paper, the country's banks look remarkably healthy given 2020's twin shocks of the pandemic and a burst property bubble. Official data, opens new tab show them sitting on 3.3 trillion yuan, roughly $460 billion, of non-performing loans. Add in another $670 billion of less-problematic-but-still-pesky "special mention" loans, which...

Lying several times at the recent Trump/Harris debate is being discussed across the nation. One thing is clear, even those who are liberals or democrats are quite insulted with Harris. If she had crafted some new and hard to fact check lie, we could at least give her credit for trying. But rather, Harris chose lies that have been fact checked repeatedly and thoroughly. It is an insult to Trump, to honesty and to all Americans. She was not heralded as the paragon of virtue before the run for the White House, but now, she has revealed the true Kamala...
  • Wholesale inflation eases again, PPI shows, ahead of Fed interest-rate cuts

The numbers: U.S. wholesale prices showed a mild increase in August and reinforced the idea the rate of inflation is returning to low prepandemic levels. The moderate increase in wholesale costs follows a similarly mild rise in consumer prices last month. With inflation slowing, the Federal Reserve is widely expected to cut interest rates next week. The producer-price index rose 0.2% last month, the government said Thursday. That matched the forecast of economists polled by the Wall Street Journal. The increase in wholesale prices in the past year slowed to 1.7% from 2.1% in the prior month and touched the...

THE REBEL FINANCES.ANOTHER LETTER FROM SECRETATY TRENHOLM.The Augusta papers publish the following letter from Secretary TRENHOLM:TREASURY DEPARTMENT, C.S.A., RICHMOND. Aug. 15, 1864. SIR: I am greatly obliged by your letter of the 8th inst., which is conceived in the true spirit of a patriot. I didn't know how to post without having a link so I apologize. I have to be honest, for most of my life (in sales), the harder I worked, generally the more money I made....more on that later. We are savers---putting in 401K, stocks, mutual funds, some precious metals, have property. We had no debt (except our mortgage----2.3% and under $100K). Recently we had a few things---our son's wedding, property taxes (up another $800 this year) car tires needing to be replaced, air conditioner crapped out, cost of food, gas, utilities, etc. We ALWAYS pay off any debt immediately but...

  • Vladimir Putin Ordered His Troops To Defeat The Ukrainian Invasion Of Kursk By Oct. 1. They Just Attacked.

In a surprise move on Aug. 6, a strong Ukrainian force—eventually numbering around a dozen battalions each with up to 400 troops—breached the defenses along the Russia-Ukraine border adjacent to Russia’s Kursk Oblast. In a heady couple of weeks before the front stabilized, the Ukrainians routed poorly-trained Russian conscripts and captured 400 square miles of Kursk Oblast. “This has put [Russian Pres. Vladimir] Putin under pressure,” U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey said. Rightly embarrassed, Putin ordered the Kremlin to recapture Kursk by Oct. 1. And on Wednesday, Russian troops dutifully launched a counterattack along the western edge of the Ukrainian...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters was joined by Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier to announce five recent arrests of students for threats made to schools, reminding parents and students that making such threats can have life-changing consequences. All three were arrested Tuesday. Waters said the threats were made electronically and gave the following details: On Aug. 22, an 11-year-old boy made a threat to River City Science Academy in a group chat thread. Waters said that the threat read, “Hello fellow citizens. Don’t worry, just don’t just don’t come to school tomorrow unless you want...
  • Gov. DeWine addresses 'massive' migration influx in Clark County

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WSYX) — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Tuesday addressed growing concerns over recent reports of a migrant influx in Clark County. (snip) Healthcare and education -- including driver education -- are two of the most pressing issues, DeWine said. (snip) DeWine on Tuesday announced a minimum of $2.5 million to help expand primary healthcare. He added that the federal government needs to step in and help, especially because, in DeWine's words, the border policy is what has allowed the migrant surge in the first place.

Various past and current elected officials gathered in New York City yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, and his running mate J.D. Vance were among them. The reactions to Trump's presence by some in the crowds were priceless. Take a look: On the day after what the Left is trying to paint as a debate loss for Trump (it wasn't), it's particularly amusing watching Harris and her friends act as if there's nothing going on. Love this so much! That’s got to just infuriate Harris. —...

My Aunt Ethel died and today is her memorial service. She was a month or so older than 101. She was the last in a family series of sisters and husbands and brothers. She was not really my aunt, but the foster sister of my mother. Ethel was like my mother and father, a child of the depression. Her family though was literally torn apart by the ravages of the Depression. My grandmother’s church stepped in and absorbed the five children into three of the church families. She and a younger sister became my mothers sisters. They were truly a...

It looks as though Tren de Aragua intended for the property to be a steady source of future revenue… trafficking and prostituting children, running guns, and extorting residents. Since all eyes have been on Aurora, Colorado and the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang terrorizing the apartment complexes, one of the property lenders hired international law firm Perkins Coie to conduct an investigation into what is really going on, and what these lawyers found is nothing short of heinous. From an article out at The Denver Gazette: Through violence and intimidation, a Venezuelan gang took over the Whispering Pines apartment complex...

On Tuesday, Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) had a complete meltdown on camera during a committee hearing over a meme that had been posted by the committee’s GOP majority on X. As the Daily Caller reports, Swalwell’s outburst in the House Judiciary Committee hearing was in response to an artificial intelligence (AI) image posted by the House Judiciary GOP account, depicting former President Donald Trump holding a duck and a cat. The image was posted with the caption “protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio!” The post was made in response to numerous widespread claims from the residents of Springfield, Ohio...

As many readers likely know, New York is the center of the legal profession in this country. New York City has a large community of major law firms that advise the business community both across the country and also internationally. This is the industry in which I had my own career prior to retiring from it in 2016. There are large numbers of distinguished practitioners who are highly sought out for every sort of legal problem. We have multiple well-known bar associations — notably the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (known as the City Bar)...

Without a functioning independent media, we’re headed to totalitarianism, but it’s not Trump’s creation. In February, 2017, the Washington Post adopted its now infamous mission statement: “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” Was it a coincidence that one of the nation’s most influential newspapers — the paper that broke the Watergate scandal and brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency — decided that its role was to save democracy just one month after President Trump was inaugurated? According to then-editor of the WaPo, Martin Barron, writing in his book Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos, and the Washington Post, this was not an attack on...
