"In the classroom at Harvard Business School where Dan Bricklin came up with the idea for an electronic spreadsheet, there now hangs a plaque that designates the resulting software program as the 'original killer app of the information age,'" Scott Kirsner reports for Boston.com. "Bricklin and his colleague Bob Frankston formed a company in 1979, Software Arts, which would eventually sell the VisiCalc spreadsheet program for $99. It ran on a new 'personal computer' called the Apple II," Kirsner reports. "Thirty years later, Bricklin is now selling a $1.99 app for the iPhone called Dan Bricklin's NoteTaker," Kirsner reports. "It...

In a situation that most any conservatives can relate to, a stupid Reporter and his Guide catches an anaconda snake off guard. Well they decide to harass the snake and play with him for a few minutes before tossing him like garbage, away from the camp. Remind you of the way the drive-by media treats conservatives? Well, that's the first thing I thought of when I watched it. Anyway, after a little while the Guide hears the reporter screaming for help. So he rushes to where the Reporter is and finds him under attack from the angry anaconda that tracked...

Dragon Dictation comes to the iPhone. Wow. by Mel Martin on Dec 8th 2009 at 12:00AM Put this into the 'I didn't think they could ever get this to work on an iPhone' category. I'm talking about Dragon Dictation [iTunes link] from Nuance, the developers of the very popular Dragon Naturally Speaking for the PC. Nuance also provides the speech recognition engine for MacSpeech Dictate on the Mac platform. To dictate on the iPhone you just launch the app, press the record button, and start talking. Your dictation can be a brief sentence, or a much longer treatise. Once the...

A Japanese mini-submarine, newly discovered in other underwater debris, may have capsized the battleship Oklahoma with a torpedo. The remains of a Japanese mini-submarine that participated in the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor have been discovered, researchers say, offering strong evidence that the sub fired its torpedoes at Battleship Row. That could settle a long-standing argument among historians. Five mini-subs were to participate in the strike, but four were scuttled, destroyed or run aground without being a factor in the attack. The fate of the fifth has remained a mystery. But a variety of new evidence suggests it fired...

At the Copenhagen climate summit, the world’s top environment watchdog welcomed the fact President Obama will now be attending the talks but said the US target of cutting carbon emissions by 17 per cent by 2020 on 2005 levels was not high enough. "To make up for this, he said the Americans must invest in a global fund to help developing countries cut their emissions. “The litmus test is show me the money,” he said. “If you are going to come to Copenhagen and you are not able to deliver emissions targets at the moment along the lines the other...

Here is video of Barbara Boxer comparing insurance which covers Viagra to justify why government health insurance should cover abortion...(Video)Boxer said "is it fair to say to a man "you're going to have to buy a rider to buy Viagra and this will be public information to be accessed?" No, I don't support that. I support a man's privacy, just as I support a woman's privacy, so it's very clear to me that this amendment would be the biggest rollback to a woman's right to choose in decades." Boxer was speaking against an amendment proposed to the Senate health bill...

Tiger Woods commercials have been absent from prime-time TV broadcast networks and 19 cable channels in the wake of reports of the golf icon’s extramarital affairs and Nov. 27 car accident. Citing data from the Nielsen Co., Bloomberg News is reporting that the last prime-time TV ad featuring Woods was a 30-second Gillette Co. commercial that aired Nov. 29. Commercials depicting Woods were not shown during weekend sports games, including NFL contests, according to Nielsen, a New York-based market research firm. “Last weekend, there wasn’t any advertisements during those games,” Nielsen spokesman Aaron Lewis told Bloomberg.

If the EPA is going to crush what is left of our manufacturing and coal powered electrical energy, what good is the congress? If the Health and Human Services can modify and amend the cradle to grave health care plan being foisted upon us, why have them write a bill in the first place? Maybe it is time to ask our representatives this question. Are you irrelevant?Even kookier, if Obama succeeds in his present course of crashing the US economy so that a "crisis doesn't go to waste" and he claims broad executive powers, what will our congress be able...

There are only two houses on Fir Tree Lane in Fort Worth, so you might think it would be relatively easy to find the right address. But when workers arrived to dig up a pipeline, a mistake was still made. They ripped out the concrete driveway on the wrong house. On Wednesday afternoon, workers did what they could to repair the damage done yesterday. A new crew arrived to begin fixing the problem caused by other subcontractors who worked on the wrong driveway by mistake. "Of course, I'm upset because my car is stuck in the driveway," homeowner Chihye Cho...

Chet Baker was a leading jazz musician in the 1950s, playing trumpet and providing vocals. Baker died in 1988, yet he is about to add a new claim to fame as the lead plaintiff in possibly the largest copyright infringement case in Canadian history. His estate, which still owns the copyright in more than 50 of his works, is part of a massive class-action lawsuit that has been underway for the past year. As my weekly technology law column (Toronto Star version, homepage version) notes, the infringer has effectively already admitted owing at least $50 million and the full claim...

33-year-old professional golfer extraordinaire appears to have amassed a collection of trollops, hussies, harlots, sluts, and other assorted mistresses and bimbos in addition to his main squeeze, the 29-year-old blond, former Swedish model Elin Nordegren to whom he was publicly married in 2004. Too much money, narcissism, ego, sex-drive, and far too many willing and perhaps conniving young women interested in short-term, shallow, fantasy affairs have created the celebrity sports/entertainment scandal of the month. The coverage may keep going for months to come as it has proven to be great fodder for our shallow 24/7 info-entertainment business. Tiger is a...

Luke 1:26-32 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not,...

What is the WRVA-Alden Aaroe Shoe Fund?.The “Shoe Fund” was started in 1968 by legendary WRVA morning host Alden Aaroe as a way to raise money to literally buy shoes for needy Richmond area youngsters. Since its conception more than 6 million dollars has been raised for that purpose. Today the fund also buys coats, school supplies and other items. One thing is still the same, every penny stays here in the Richmond area. The fund is administered by the Greater Richmond Salvation Army. If you’re interested in making enough of a contribution to pay for a pair of shoes,...

Just picked up a 1943 M1 Garand. What I'd like to know is...EVERYTHING about the Garand. 1. I need to know where to get ball ammo to feed it (it's a bit scarce, as far as I can tell); 2. I'd like to know the best data sheet/book on the Garand (breakdown, cleaning, greasing, etc.); 3. The best info I can get on making the weapon as accurate as possible (peep sights on the current configuration); 4. Where I'm most likely to pick up the best (and best valued!) accessories for it (slings, parts, etc). I know...I should Google all...

2009 will probably go down as the Year of Stupid. Everywhere you look you see birthers, deathers, deniers, tea fetishists, and semi-literate amateur pundits screaming and frothing over their unsupported, repeatedly debunked line of argument. They are wrong. Dead wrong. Distractingly, even dangerously wrong. And since they will not, or more likely cannot, understand this fact they go on screaming and frothing in a fruitless quest for validation. They'll disrupt town hall meetings, Congressional addresses, and children's birthday parties to remind you, just in case you allowed yourself to forget for even a moment, of just how painfully stupid they...

Apple Bans Another Developer, 1000+ Apps Pulled by Greg Kumparak on December 7, 2009 As the old mantra goes, “Cheaters never prosper”. In this digital age, it may be time to revise that saying. Granted a veil of anonymity by the Internet, cheaters surely prosper from their cheating; it’s just that when they get caught, they go down hard. Alas, “Cheaters may temporarily prosper – but if they get caught, they’re totally boned” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Such was the case earlier today, when the development company behind over 1,000 iPhone applications was busted scamming the...

President Barack Obama recently called Rep. John Conyers Jr. to express his frustrations with the Judiciary Committee chairman’s criticism. In an interview with The Hill, Conyers said his opinions of Obama’s policies on healthcare reform and the war in Afghanistan have not sat well with the president. According to the lawmaker, the president picked up the phone several weeks ago to find out why Conyers was “demeaning” him. Obama’s decision to challenge Conyers highlights a sensitivity to criticism the president has taken on the left. Conyers’s critical remarks, many of which have been reported on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post, appear...

Tiger Woods told one of his alleged mistresses his marriage was a sham -- "It's only for publicity" -- this, according to her lawyer. We've also learned she has lurid details of the alleged 2-year affair and Tiger's lawyer has already contacted her attorney. Michael O'Quinn tells TMZ his client -- O'Quinn asked us not to ID her by name but it's not Jamie Junger -- met Tiger Woods at Roxy Nightclub in Orlando, Florida in 2004. Tiger was engaged at the time. The woman -- then a 20-year-old cocktail waitress at the club -- claims she went back to...

Reports show Orange County firefighters responded to a medical call at Tiger Woods' Isleworth mansion this morning. Orange County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Genevieve Latham said firefighters responded to a home in the 6300 block of Deacon Circle at 2:36 a.m. The exact address of the call is listed as Tiger Woods' home, according to Orange County property records. "It was a medical call and the patient refused to be transported to the hospital," Latham said. This is the second time rescue crews show up at Woods' home since the Nov. 27 accident. Although some news reports show a female patient...

Can Oprah save Tiger? As Tiger Woods' alleged-mistress count rises by the day, a public confession on "Oprah" could be his best shot for redemption Can Oprah help Tiger rehab his image? Things just keep getting worse for Tiger Woods. As his number of alleged mistresses rises to six (or higher), his wife Elin Nordegren has reportedly moved out of their Florida home, his favorability rating has dropped 24 points, and gossip sites say his post-crash hospital records may indicate a drug overdose. Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey's producers have invited Woods to address the scandal on her TV show. Could a...

Question for the group at large. Do NFL game officials ever get fined and/or fired for making bad calls? I'm not talking about just one or two bad calls, but a series of questionable calls during an entire game, even a season. Or how about for a blown call that obviously changes the outcome of the game?

There seem to be two kinds of people in the world: those who don't understand cats, and those who think cats are kind of douchebags. Unfortunately for cat lovers, science has kind of come down on the side of that second group. Research has revealed that a lot of the quirky and even cute things your kitty does are actually signs that your cat is kind of a d***.

The cover of the January 2010 issue of Golf Digest probably seemed like a great idea at the time. The issue is available on newsstands now and CNBC reports that Golf Digest says it has no plans to pull it. "10 Tips Obama can take from Tiger"? Huh. I can think of a few dozen. (Aside: "How to outsmart your buddies"? "Load it & let it go"? This cover is a gold mine of unintentional comedy.) Tiger and Obama have a history; Tiger spoke at Obama's inauguration and later visited the White House. Obama, of course, has begun embracing golf...

Apple can be copied, but can it be beat? By Jim Dalrymple DECEMBER 8, 2009, 8:15 AM PT Apple has some of the best selling computers in the market, it’s the No. 1 music distributor, it sells movies, TV shows, iPods and it’s changing the mobile space with the iPhone and App Store. It’s also one of the most copied companies in the world, but can anyone beat them? It’s almost funny to watch companies line up to put out products that mimic Apple’s look and functionality. Apple puts out a new iPod and all of a sudden there are...

There once was a golfer named Tiger Woods. Allegedly, Tiger did something bad involving nightclub hostesses, VH-1 reality show contestants, and a supposed laundry list of other women who are not his wife. Thanks to the National Enquirer and Us Weekly, the whole world found out, and the once squeaky-clean golfer found himself enmeshed in a bit of a crisis PR campaign. Will Tiger's once-pristine image ever be restored to its former PGA champion, Gillette razor-hawking glory? There is hope. It turns out there are plenty of once-revered athletes who have trashed their reputations with various dalliances in illegal (or immoral)...

Thousands of people assembled on Wednesday at the temple near Indi in the district of Bijapur to witness the event, which is said to confer good health and a long life on the baby and bring prosperity to the family. But the...

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—With growing concerns about the effects of global warming on polar bears, it's increasingly important to understand how other environmental threats, such as mercury pollution, are affecting these magnificent Arctic animals. New research led by biogeochemists Travis Horton of the University of Canterbury and Joel Blum of the University of Michigan lays the groundwork for assessing current and future effects of mercury deposition and climate change on polar bears. The study appears in the December issue of the journal Polar Research. Mercury is a naturally occurring element, but some 150 tons of it enter the environment each year...
