SARASOTA, Fla. - Joseph Smith should be executed for kidnapping, raping and murdering Carlie Brucia, the 11-year-old girl whose abduction was captured by a surveillance camera and broadcast around the world, a jury recommended Thursday. Jurors deliberated five hours before arriving at their recommendation, voting 10-2 for the death penalty. Circuit Judge Andrew Owens ultimately will issue the sentence, as early as next month. Under the law, he must give great weight to the jury's choice before imposing a sentence of death or life in prison without parole.

SARASOTA, Fla.  — A jury reached its verdict Thursday in the murder trial of a former mechanic charged with kidnapping, raping and killing , whose abduction was caught by a security camera.

The defendant, who is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing 11-year-old Carlie Brucia in Sarasota in February 2004, didn't take the stand. Instead, the jury heard his voice was on tape recordings made from the Manatee County Jail in the weeks that followed Carlie's disappearance. *****Smith says, "It was an accident, mom. Smith's defense attorney wants the judge to throw out a car wash surveillance videotape showing Carlie Brucia's abduction.
