  • Outdoor giant Bass Pro Shops to acquire rival Cabela's for $5.5B

Outdoor gear giants Bass Pro and Cabela's will combine in $5.5 billion deal announced Monday. The deal will give Cabela's shareholders $65.50 cash per share, but it creates uncertainty about jobs in the retailer's home state of Nebraska. The combined companies plan to keep some operations in Sidney and Lincoln, Nebraska, but it's not immediately clear how many jobs might be lost. Bass Pro CEO Johnny Morris says he hopes to continue growing the Cabela's brand alongside his own Springfield, Missouri, based chain.

If you’re a person in the USA, you probably get ads in the mail all the time from gun and outdoor stores advertising firearms, especially during November and December, or whenever Obama says anything about more gun laws. Sometimes these ads come in the Wednesday flyer pile in the newspaper, as was the case this week when a Cabela’s ad featuring an AR 15 was circulated in the Oregonian ads. Most people either chuck the ad or save it and head to whatever gun shop it is. Unless you’re Willamette Week author Coby Hutzler or reader Doug Menely, then you...

With second amendment politics effectively stopping federal gun control legislation in a calendar year replete with mass...

Cabela’s has hired a communications firm that advertises itself as a “defender” of companies against activist investors as the retailer could be looking to put itself up for sale. "No one has defended more companies against the big-name activist shareholders," the firm, Joele Frank, says on its websiteCabela’s hasn’t commented publicly on the activist’s stake, but the hiring of Joele Frank suggests the Sidney-based company isn’t rolling over in the face of the big shareholder agitating for change. Cabela’s is under pressure to make big changes after the New York-based activist investor announced earlier this month a big stake in...

Dick, along with his wife, Mary, and brother, Jim, founded Cabelas somewhat inadvertently in 1961 when he purchased $45 worth of hand-tied fishing flies while in Chicago on a furniture and housewares buying trip with his father for the familys Chappell, Neb., furniture store. The companys two biggest shareholders, founders Richard and James Cabela, have seen the value of their combined 25% stake jump to $1.2 billion from $750 million at the start of 2013. Some big names in the hunting media and vending have stood up to the organizers of the Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show. Following the tragic shooting in December at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut, and President Obamas sweeping executive orders on gun violence, many states and organizations have themselves pushed for changes in certain gun and ammunition restrictions. Reed Exhibitions, organizers of the show in Pennsylvania, followed suit and imposed restrictions on the display of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. January 1, 2013 brought a host of new taxes, fees, and charges to the American people. Some of them were anticipated. Others, like the (Medical Device Excise Tax) (MDET), were not at least not in this way. How so? Well, the MDET has started showing up on the receipts for purchases made at sporting goods giant Cabelas. This receipt from one such store in Texas is making the rounds on the web. It shows an additional tax has been added to the purchase, after the local sales tax of nearly 10% was charged. [snip] What is a Medical Excise...

I just received my coupon from Cabela's today in the mail and must say I am both surprised and disappointed. Not only was the amount lowered from $100 to $75 off a $500 purchase, but now it does not apply to firearms. Awhile back, I was talking to several guys at a gun show who remembered when it was $150. The magic of Cabela's is definitely disappearing. Sad.

Shares of Cabela's (NYSE: CAB) soared more than 30% last week on record fourth-quarter 2008 results, which were driven by strong firearms sales. According to management, 2009 performance is set to pack less pow, but given a strengthened balance sheet and modest expansion plans, I say Cabela's deserves a closer look. Before tapping the wisdom of the Motley Fool CAPS investment community, let's take a look at some key stats for the company.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. The fish, measuring 58 inches long and 44 inches around, was kept alive and was to be displayed in a tank at Cabela's in Kansas City, Kan., but it died en route to the store. ``We're baffled by this,'' Fred Cronin, a fisheries biologist for the Illinois...

ALTON, Ill. - It sounds like the sort of tale Mark Twain might have cooked up: A man fishing in the Mississippi River hauls in a blue catfish roughly the size of a sixth-grader. But this is no fish story. Early Sunday, Tim Pruitt caught a 124-pound blue catfish. To get a sense of just how big that is, the state record holder was a mere 85 pounds and the world record holder tipped the scales at 121 pounds, 8 ounces. Now, Pruitt, whose fish has already been weighed in the presence of a conservation police officer and measured by...
