Putting U.S. troops on the ground in Syria to counter the Islamic State and take on Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime would be a mistake, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Wednesday. "I don't believe the answer is sending boots on the ground to Syria," the Republican candidate for president told reporters in Washington. "President Obama , and I think far too many Republicans , are eager to get us in the middle of an internecine civil war in Syria. We don't have a dog in that fight." Assad is a "monster" who has murdered women and children and gassed his...

A police officer in Los Angeles County shot and killed while sitting in his police car in his department's parking lot appeared to be targeted, officials said Thursday. The officer, identified by officials as Ricardo Galvez, was in his car when multiple people approached and opened fire late Wednesday night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. "While he was sitting there, a couple of individuals ran up on his car, shot into his car and struck him with gunfire," Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said during a news conference early Thursday.

CLOVIS, Calif. -- The biggest weapons seizure ever made in a single home by the California Department of Justice, and it happened in Clovis -- more than 500 firearms and 100,000 rounds of ammunition. "I believe it makes the neighborhood safer as well as the state of California," said DOJ Special Agent-In-Charge Michael Haroldsen. State agents arrested 59-year-old Albert Sheakalee at his home last week. Sheakalee didn't deny having the impressive haul of weapons -- including ten assault weapons, 88 shotguns and 234 rifles. But his son tells Action News it was a bogus government gun grab -- even though...

The state's chief regulator for oil and gas fields issued an emergency order Wednesday demanding that the perpetrator of a nearly month-long natural gas leak in Aliso Canyon that has irritated residents of Porter Ranch turn over all its test data and submit plans to seal up the breach. State Oil and Gas Supervisor Steven Bohlen ordered Southern California Gas Co. to provide all testing results and data and asked for a written plan to seal the leak and,if necessary, a plan to complete a relief well. The company has tried since Oct. 23 to stem the flow of gas...

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) uses a 34-page manual to instruct its followers on how to stay invisible on the Internet. The Arabic document was translated and released this week by analysts at the Combating Terrorism Center, an independent research group at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It includes warnings to avoid Instagram because it is owned by Facebook, and Dropbox because former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sits on its board of investors. Famous government leaker Edward Snowden has also criticized Dropbox over its privacy, the document notes. Users are also directed to use...

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's struggles are not only limited to the early primary states, as support among voters in the Garden State has fallen significantly, according to a new poll. In the latest Fairleigh-Dickinson poll, Christie pulls only 9 percent support of voters. This comes as Donald Trump leads in the state with 31 percent backing, with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio taking second with 18 percent support, twice that of the governor. Dr. Ben Carson also leads the sitting governor, raking in 11 percent support.

It may offer the best political science course on campus, but the lessons are lost on bureaucrats: UC-San Diego's fabled "Che Cafe" is awash in red ink and in need of a bailout. Students have run the restaurant, named for Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, for 34 years, but they've steered it into the ground. Boasting of "exorbitantly low" prices, the vegan co-op and concert venue that once hosted an up-and-coming Nirvana has cost the student body nearly $1 million over the years, and isn't kept up to fire or safety codes. The ragtag band of volunteer staffers, who call themselves...

Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican presidential field in Florida — outstripping his nearest rival, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio — by two-to-one among primary voters, a new Florida Atlantic University poll shows. Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton has coasted to an even bigger lead, leading Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders by 66 percent to 22 percent of the vote in that party’s nomination contest, the poll shows. The survey was conducted Sunday and Monday, in the wake of news about the terrorist attacks in Paris. Among Florida Republican registered voters surveyed, Trump leads with 36 percent, Rubio is at 18...

Donald Trump is taking it easy on Bobby Jindal, despite being called an "egomaniacal madman" by the Louisiana governor just two months before Jindal decided to withdraw from the 2016 presidential race. "[Jindal] was, you know, a little nasty with me," Trump told CNN Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the two-term governor announced the suspension of his campaign during an appearance on Fox News. "But I think ultimately [he] was very nice," Trump added. "Everyone's nasty to me because they want to get votes."

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 17, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) - The words of Dr. Ben Carson, and the actions of Gov. Jeb Bush, disqualify them both from serving as president of the United States, a leading pro-life leader said today. "We have seen what it is like to have a president who does not value every life equally, and we certainly do not need another," said Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue. "In my opinion, Ben Carson's statement dismissing Terri's life as 'nothing,' and Jeb Bush's failure to take action to save Terri, has disqualified them both from the office of president."...

Jeb Bush may be low-energy, but when it comes to Syrian refugees, he isn’t low-empathy. Unlike nearly all of his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, Bush said Tuesday that he would not support efforts to end refugee resettlement.“The answer to this is not to ban people from coming,†Bush told Bloomberg Television’s With All Due Respect. “The answer is to lead, to resolve the problem in Syria.â€Bush emphasized that he wanted any refugees resettled in the United States to be rigorously vetted — which is already standard policy in the States — but said support for refugees was “a...

Ben Carson's remarks on foreign policy have repeatedly raised questions about his grasp of the subject, but never more seriously than in the past week, when he wrongly asserted that China had intervened militarily in Syria and then failed, on national television, to name the countries he would call on to form a coalition to fight the Islamic State. Faced with increasing scrutiny about whether Mr. Carson - who leads in some Republican presidential polls - was capable of leading American foreign policy, two of his top advisers said in interviews with The New York Times that he had struggled...

As President Obama presses communities to accept Syrian refugees, his current hometown of Washington, D.C., is likely to be spared much of the pain. There are about 180 communities across the U.S. that welcome refugees, but some of the more obvious cities, including San Francisco, New York and, yes, Washington, aren't high on the list because they are just too darn expensive for the refugees. Instead, the top major cities are places such as Atlanta, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Boston, the State Department says. And there are a host of medium-sized cities as well: Boise, Idaho, Nashville, Tennessee,...

In the aftermath of the series of protests in Paris against occupation by activists and militants, who have grievances, we bring you the French plan for peace, based on France's Mideast policies. It is the only way to solve the problem of ISIS activism in Paris. First, we all agree that territory must not be annexed by force. Therefore, we can also agree that Germany has a moral right to demand the return of Alsace-Lorraine, for the French aggression in 1945 and its consequent occupation must not be rewarded. "A full withdrawal for full peace" should operate here. Further, France...

Real estate mogul Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican presidential field by a wide margin, after seeing his support dip in late October. Trump leads with 38 percent of the vote, twice the level of support of his nearest competitor, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who takes 19 percent. *snip* Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tie for third, at 7 percent each, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) finishes with 6 percent. No other contender scores above 3 percent of the vote. Trump's lead is built on strong support from voters who have not attended college...

As California continues its longterm battle with droughts, perhaps it should look to another arid land for some advice. 1. Ban flood irrigation Flood irrigation wastes approximately half the water used to evaporation. According to a 2010 irrigation survey in California, flood irrigation accounted for 43% of irrigated land, including 78% of corn, 79% of grains, and 85% of sugar beet. In Israel, no farmer has used flood irrigation since the early 1970s. 2. Provide tax incentives to purchase drip irrigation equipment Drip irrigation is 90-95% water efficient and increases crop yield, but many farmers are put off by the...

El Niño is already the strongest we’ve seen in more than 15 years, and it’s only getting stronger, according to a report released Monday from the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization. In fact, the weather pattern, which has already delivered extreme weather in parts of the world, is on track to be among the most powerful ever. It’s already been blamed for extreme weather events around the world, including major coral bleaching, an intense cyclone season, wildfires in Southeast Asia and drought conditions in parts of Africa, to name just a few. For California, it means increased risk of heavy flooding...
