“I am terrified.” This is how Christine Blasey Ford felt, as she told 17 men and four women on the Senate Judiciary Committee about Brett Kavanaugh’s alleged sexual assault against her in high school. Andrea Constand—one woman who Bill Cosby drugged and raped—"felt traumatized all over again" when she had to face her rapist in court. “I had to relive every moment of the sexual assault in horrifying detail in front of Mr. Cosby and his lawyers," she wrote in her harrowing victim impact statement. This is a story about love and betrayal. Andrea Barone was barely 18 months old when he first set out on the ice, his tiny legs shaking and pushing behind a chair along the cold surface. If, in Montreal, hockey is religion, then this was baptism by ritual, every morning practice, every unsteady drag of his skates drawing him closer to the game he was falling for. .... Barone is sure of two things about himself: He is a hockey man, and he is a gay man. In the sport he has devoted his life to, this has proved an...

HALIFAX -- The women's march in Halifax was roiled by divisions, as members of an offshoot event showed up to call for the recognition of marginalized groups after some people said they felt unsafe at last year's gathering. Throngs of people returned to Halifax's Grand Parade square on Saturday for a rally on the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. president. People held up signs on issues ranging from worker's rights to the jailing of a Palestinian activist during an event that included a Mi'kmaq prayer, a Chinese lion dance, a traditional Indian dance and a drumming performance....

OTTAWA — Some Facebook users have been mistaking Canada’s Status of Women ministry for a dating service offering Canadian wives, according to the government. Comments to the agency’s posts that propose marriage are regularly deleted by staff. Spokeswomen Léonie Roux told the Post generic examples of such responses include, but are not limited to, “Looking for wife in Canada” and “I want a wife, I want to give you a call.” Part of the trouble is the account username, “Women in Canada.” While this accurately reflects the agency’s area of focus, Roux said, it causes some users to make false...

Sorry, Lulu. Maybe you have another calling. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had to fire one of its cutest employees, who simply didn’t demonstrate the initiative needed for the very important job. Lulu’s departure from the prestigious job was announced in a “Pupdate” by the agency Wednesday, who regretfully acknowledged that she just wasn’t meant for sniffing bombs. They tried offering the black Labrador some work benefits such as treats and extra playtime, but said: “Even when they could motivate her with food and play to search, she was clearly not enjoying herself any longer.”

(CNN)Across the state of Florida, and up into Georgia and South Carolina, images of first responders have become a welcome sight amid the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. But among the usual uniforms -- those of police, firefighters and paramedics -- a nun's habit stands out. And when said nun is wielding a chainsaw, well, that is something that can renew faith in even the most downtrodden. "There was a need, I had the means, so I wanted to help out," Sister Margaret Ann told Erin Burnett on Tuesday evening. A 30-year education veteran from Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School...

Researchers say they were able to produce 'diamond rain' using fancy plastic and high-powered lasers to recreate the intense conditions of the planets .... Consider this your daily reminder that the solar system is even more awesomely bonkers than you realized: On Uranus and Neptune, scientists forecast rain storms of solid diamonds. The gems form in the hydrocarbon-rich oceans of slush that swath the gas giants’ solid cores. Scientists have long speculated that the extreme pressures in this region might split those molecules into atoms of hydrogen and carbon, the latter of which then crystallize to form diamonds. These diamonds...

After a 911 call for unknown trouble, officers arrive and find a man in distress, wielding some kind of object. Three words, known to those in law enforcement as the "police challenge," pierce the morning air. "Drop your weapon!" Seconds later, gunshots. It's an all-too-familiar scenario at coroner's inquests in Canada, according to some mental health experts. This week, a jury in Ontario is expected to reveal a list of recommendations that are supposed to give police the tools to respond effectively to civilians in crisis. The recommendations come after a weeks-long inquest into the fatal police shooting of Michael...

A narrow strip of land connecting Nova Scotia to New Brunswick is a lifeline for maritime moose in the mood to mate—and itÂ’s under threat The Chignecto Isthmus—the corridor connecting New Brunswick to Nova Scotia that at its narrowest is just 24 km wide—poses a uniquely Canadian problem. On one side of the land bridge thrives a healthy population of more than 25,000 moose; on the other, numbers have dwindled to as few as 500. Long classiï¬ed as endangered, the Nova Scotia moose is perilously close to extinction. All moose face poaching, parasites, climate change and habitat loss. But unlike...

Before you launch a rocket, you need to count the moose. Maritime Launch Services, the company that hopes to build a spaceport on a parcel of Nova Scotia land that juts into the ocean near Canso in Guysborough County, must first complete an environmental review — including counting seasonal numbers of local flora and fauna — before the province agrees to the project. “We’ve hired a contractor to help us do the study,” MLS president Steve Matier said Monday. “We could conceivably complete that effort at the end of this year.” “It’s part of the process, and it’s understood. We...

Lorne Grabher is very proud of his unique family name, which comes from German origins. It's displayed on the front of his house, as well as on his personalized licence plate. "Well, I am the only one in Eastern Canada," says Lorne Grabher. "I originally had it done for my father back in 1991 for his birthday. It was to have our name be put on something and be proud of it." But in December, Grabher received a letter from Nova Scotia’s Registrar of Motor Vehicles, telling him they'd received a complaint and had deemed the licence plate 'socially...

A man who posed as Justin Bieber online has been charged with more than 900 child sex-related crimes in Australia. The man, 42, masqueraded as the Canadian singer to gain explicit images from children, Queensland Police said. He was charged with 931 crimes, including three of rape, involving 157 alleged victims across the globe. Detective Inspector Jon Rouse called the allegations "frankly horrendous" and warned young fans of the singer and parents to be vigilant. A former ombudsman at one of Canada’s big banks has been tapped to investigate complaints of a far more frothy nature: beer. The Beer Store has appointed Charles Dougall as Ontario’s first beer ombudsman. The foreign-owned consortium, which operates more than 470 retail outlets throughout the province, says Dougall will be responsible for mediating operational disputes between the Beer Store, its customers and brewers.
