Marion Hammer was 5 when she first held a gun in her hands. Her grandfather handed her a .22 bolt-action single-shot rifle and told her to hunt down a rabbit or a squirrel for dinner. She practiced first, aiming at cans lined up on the wooden fence. "I remember seeing a great big red tomato right on the front of that can," she recalled in 1995 as she ascended to the presidency of the powerful National Rifle Association. "And on my first shot, I drilled the tomato dead center." She's in her 70s now -- a 4-foot, 11-inch granny gone...

~snip~ “Do you know the individual that stepped up when no one else in the black community would?” the family member wrote. “Do you know who spent tireless hours putting flyers on the cars of persons parked in the churches of the black community? Do you know who waited for the churchâ€goers to get out of church so that he could hand them fliers in an attempt to organize the black community against this horrible miscarriage of justice? Do you know who helped organize the City Hall meeting on January 8th, 2011 at Sanford City Hall??” ~snip~

In recent weeks, the GOP attack on contraceptives and women’s rights has been returning to the legislative tables, and causing a stir among women’s rights activists and media outlets nationwide. Now it seems that many within the Republican party who strive to ban contraceptive use also see it as a necessity to prohibit the use of tampons, and seek to ban the sales of these and similar products as soon as possible. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) recently put together an all male panel for discussion at the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing on the contraceptive coverage rule...

It is designed to penalize those who finance and/or attend dog and cock fights and impose additional penalties on those who bring children to such events. Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) president and CEO Wayne Pacelle is also scheduled to be on...

Mail carriers are scrambling in Scranton this spring after seven dog bite attacks—the most in recent memory. Letter carrier Lyn Sottile was bitten by a chocolate Labrador that ran through an invisible fence, bit her leg and punctured the can of mace she carries. The injury took her off the route for a week, according to local news reports. Postal workers are victims of only some of the more than 4.7 million dog bites annually. Each year 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of them children. Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department and...

A BEAUTY therapist whose dog sunk its teeth into a woman when it was dangerously out of control, told magistrates she would rather go to prison than pay compensation to her victim. ~ The dog was not on a leash and immediately ran to the area where the girls were watching the bunny, thus scaring the children. The dog did not bother the children at that time but instead went about its business. The suspect and his dog then walked away from the girls and the girls went back to watching the bunny. After the suspect and his dog returned from their walk they went to the area where the children were watching the bunny. The mother of the children saw the suspect get a "smirk" on his face and saw him...

A postal worker was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after she was attacked by a large dog yesterday on Beach Road. Animal Control seized the dog and it will remain quarantined for 10 days, said city spokesperson Debbie Spence. That is the standard time for rabies tests. The dog is believed to be an Azores cattle dog, sometimes known as a Portuguese Fila, Spence said. Investigators will try to determine if the animal should be classified as a dangerous dog. The length of the investigation will depend on when staff can speak with the victim and what she...

Owner Allen Delaney didn’t have to just hear it. He had to watch his Bichon Frise get suddenly attacked by a golden retriever, one of four dogs being walked, unleashed, by another man on Old Town Hall Houses property, where Delaney lives. Delaney, a retired Darien police officer, also has bite marks on his hand. He is not entirely sure if the bites are from the other dog or his own, as he jumped in the middle of the fight to save his smaller dog. He also said that the other dog owner attempted to break up the fight as...

The child, who deputies said was briefly left alone in her back yard near Ocala with four bulldogs, was mauled to death by one of them, investigators said. The Marion County Sheriff's Office originally said the dogs were pit bulls. The girl, whose name was not released, was in the back yard of the house in the 6500 block of NE 25th Ave. with her mother, Lori Haaker, owner of Haaker's Dream Bulldog Ranch. The moment I hear Elisabeth Shepherd's voice on the phone I think she sounds like just the sort of person you would want looking after you if you were ill~~snip~~It's because of the hard times and the dark emotional wilderness the human soul has to find some way to cross - even when it is exhausted and ground down by long weeks, months and years of dealing with the almost intolerable - that I am here to talk to her.

Not long before his death, Harry and I headed out for a walk that proved eventful. He was nearly 13, old for a big dog. Walks were no longer the slap-happy Iditarods of his youth, frenzies of purposeless pulling in which we would cast madly off in all directions, fighting for command. Nor were they the exuberant archaeological expeditions of his middle years, when every other tree or hydrant or blade of grass held tantalizing secrets about his neighbors. In his old age, Harry had transformed his walk into a simple process of elimination—a dutiful, utilitarian, head-down trudge. When finished,...

As y'all know there is a Freepathon going on and I thought it might be a fun idea to raise some contributions in Chet's name. Kinda like making lemonade out of lemons. As you might be aware, our buddy Chet like to post pitbull stories. I'm suggesting to those who want to join in that over the next week we set aside a certain amount of money each day to be donated to FR. There can be 2 donation levels, one of $5/day and one of $10/day. From those base levels we will subtract $1/day for each pitbull article that...
