Mail carrier injured in dog attack
The Hamilton Spectator ^ | June 04, 2010 | staff

A postal worker was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after she was attacked by a large dog yesterday on Beach Road.

Animal Control seized the dog and it will remain quarantined for 10 days, said city spokesperson Debbie Spence. That is the standard time for rabies tests.

The dog is believed to be an Azores cattle dog, sometimes known as a Portuguese Fila, Spence said.

Investigators will try to determine if the animal should be classified as a dangerous dog.

The length of the investigation will depend on when staff can speak with the victim and what she says, Spence said.

postal worker was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after she was attacked by a large dog yesterday on Beach Road.

And yet

Investigators will try to determine if the animal should be classified as a dangerous dog.

It seems to me that the dog should be killed and the owner sued for compensatory and punative damages caused by the dog.

Too bad it's likely improper to post a picture of the dogs in stories such as this one. I don't pretend to know a lot about dogs, but I'm familiar with the Alaunt," or "Alan," the legendary "Butcher's Dog" of Central Asia and Europe. Many familiar breeds are its descendants, ranging from Pitt Bulls to the Great Danes.

These were able to bring a cow down in it's path (or a horse and its knight) and were in other contexts known as "Dogs of War."

Now thought to be extinct, the last of the pure breads was photographed in the Canary Islands a century ago.

News of a "Portuguese cattle dog" immediately drew my curiosity. Sounds like it might be kin.

To each their own, but this would not be an ideal breed choice for a pet, especially if you wanted to purchase home owner's insurance.

Literature about the breed warns that they can be very aggressive,[3] a characteristic said to be valuable in handling feral cattle, but potentially dangerous in a pet.

This is another breed that requires an experienced owner.

The owner may be experienced but in this case she/he wasn't around to stop the dog from biting the letter carrier.

And when you are dealing with something like this the owner better be around and ready.

“Mail carrier injured in dog attack” is not news. “Dog injured in mail carrier attack” would be news.
