The family of a 3-year-old girl mauled to death by an American Bulldog is mourning her death today.
The child, who deputies said was briefly left alone in her back yard near Ocala with four bulldogs, was mauled to death by one of them, investigators said.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office originally said the dogs were pit bulls.
The girl, whose name was not released, was in the back yard of the house in the 6500 block of NE 25th Ave. with her mother, Lori Haaker, owner of Haaker's Dream Bulldog Ranch. Haaker, a National Kennel Club judge of American Bulldogs, was cleaning the dog pen but went inside the house briefly, leaving her daughter alone, sheriff's spokeswoman Jenifer Fisher said.

Woof
Soon to be misidentified in a media source near you.
I LIVE IN DAYTONA AND SAW THIS ON THE NEWS THIS MORNING....
they showed a pic of the dog that killed the little girl...the pic was that of a pitbull....not sure why they would want to cover up the fact that it was a pit if it was....
Small farmers and ranchers used this all-around working dog for many tasks. By the end of World War II, however, the breed was almost extinct. Mr. John D. Johnson, a returning war veteran, decided to resurrect this breed.
Along with Alan Scott and several other breeders, Johnson began to carefully breed American Bulldogs, keeping careful records and always with an eye for maintaining the breed's health and working abilities. The American Bulldog was recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999.
Perhaps the most important role of the bulldog and the reason for its survival and in fact why it thrived through out the South was because of the presence of feral pigs, introduced to the New World and without predators.[1] The bulldogs were the settlers' only means of sufficiently dealing with the vermin.
By World War II, the breed was near extinction until John D. Johnson and his father scoured the backroads of the South looking for the best specimens to revive the breed. During this time a young Alan Scott grew an interest in Mr. Johnson's dogs and began to work with him on the revitalization process.
At some point, Alan Scott began infusing non-Johnson catch bulldogs from working southern farms with John D. Johnson's line creating the now Standard American Bulldog.
At another point, Mr. Johnson began crossing his line with an atavistic English Bulldog from the North that had maintained its genetic athletic vigor. This created a falling out between Johnson and Scott causing them to go their separate ways and breed the two significantly different versions of the American Bulldog.
“Lori Haaker, owner of Haaker’s Dream Bulldog Ranch. Haaker, a National Kennel Club judge of American bulldogs,”...
“The dogs were chained individually to trees and were behind fencing”
Why are they chained to trees? I hope the AKC takes a look at this woman
They are a short haired muscular dog.
It is not surprising that you mistook it for a ‘pit bull’.
Thr owners were breeders of American Bulldogs.
The woman was a National Kennel Club judge of American Bulldogs.
American Bulldogs are but one of many breeds commonly identified under the catch-all “pitbull”. Intentionally, or through ignorance, it inflates the statistics.
AKC doesn’t register American Bulldogs
i still believe the pic that was shown was that of a pit bull...now that being said the pic they stated as being the dog that killed the little girl may have been shown incorrectly from a file pic they had at the time...but the pic shown was that of a pit....i have seen enough of them to know what they look like...
Kudos to the news source for taking the pains to get the breed right rather than jumping on the usual misinformation bandwagon.
We had a new poster with first hand information of the situation.
Unfortunately the thread was pulled for review and hasn’t been reinstated.
I just don’t get it, if you have kids don’t have any dogs capable of doing this1
National Kennel Club, I need to read more carefully. Thanx
Hmmmm. Of course, many FReepers believe that the same MSM who distorts and twists news on the economy, the war on terror, healthcare, etc. are completely objective, accurate and agenda-free when reporting on dog attacks. I'm sure the use of a file photo of a pitbull must have been an honest error.
but of course it would have been...(sarc)

American Bulldog=pit bull
