Police: Dog ordered to kill rabbit in front of horrified kids
KATU News ^ | June 2nd,2010 | staff

~
The dog was not on a leash and immediately ran to the area where the girls were watching the bunny, thus scaring the children. The dog did not bother the children at that time but instead went about its business. The suspect and his dog then walked away from the girls and the girls went back to watching the bunny.

After the suspect and his dog returned from their walk they went to the area where the children were watching the bunny. The mother of the children saw the suspect get a "smirk" on his face and saw him direct his dog towards the bunny that the children were watching. The suspect told his dog to "get it," ordering his dog to go after the bunny as the girls watched in horror. The dog captured the rabbit and tossed it into the air, toying with it.

People who witnessed the incident noted that the suspect was laughing as this was occurring.

As the children began to cry, the suspect called his dog off of the bunny, then told it to "get it" again, apparently killing the bunny. Back in the parking lot the suspect began to taunt the three-year old child and he was also heard praising his dog about the incident.

I’m sure it happened the way it’s described. My only comment is that my dog would not have to be “told” to get the rabbit. Just sayin’.

Sounds like a well trained dog. Too bad the owner is a juvenile jerk.

It’s called “Nature,” and unless the bunny was their pet, this doesn’t really seem “newsworthy,” at least in my opinion. Tactless maybe, but doesn’t seem like it should be a problem.

Of course with cartoons about vegetarian sharks, and lions befriending their prey, the children get confused...

My dog sits at the living room window waiting for squirrels to come to the bird feeder and then demands to get out to give chase to them.

and he has caught a number of them.....

I guess we are guilty too, then, of the crime of allowing dogs to be dogs.

Next on the list to get the law thrown at them? Cat owners?

Did the owner use the rabbit for food? No. He did this simply to horrify children, one of which was only 3. That makes him an idiot. What adult male picks on kids?

was this a pet rabbit???

or a wild rabbit or hare.

I mean both would be wrong but killing a family pet would be worse.

my old shepherd, dead now these 25 years loved to walk in woods and fields, next to my house with me, problem would be that he could catch a rabbit or squirrel before I could stop him and one shake and it was dead....rats and mice fell prey to him too, which I did not try to prevent as the vermin destroyed my gardens etc....

if the owner maliciously got the dog to kill the rabbit (as it appears) he needs something to think about what he did....jail time and/or fines at least...he also needs to be punished for berating a 3 year old...sick dude

The incident was reported to police the next day and it didn't take long for them to identify 33-year-old Luke Kishpaugh of Salem as their suspect.

A$$holes that big are somewhat rare...

“Did the owner use the rabbit for food?”

Don’t know, and it really doesn’t matter, dogs still have an instinct to kill, it’s nature.

“He did this simply to horrify children, one of which was only 3.”

I couldn’t possibly know that, I’m not the man.

“What adult male picks on kids?”

Lots. But unless the rabbit was theirs, I don’t consider this to be picking on kids. I don’t believe in insulating kids from the realities of nature. You’re free to disagree. I don’t think that seeing that as horrific as you do, apparently. Growing up, I watched nature shows on TV, I’m not sure if at 3, but long before 5 years old, and it never bothered me. It’s called life. People and animals kill for sport, as well as food.

Tactless, yes, I already said that, but that doesn’t make it criminal. You’re free to your opinion, I don’t share it.

It would be "nature" if the dog had just seen the bunny and went after it. But what this miserable scumbag did was way beyond "tactless." In fact, it borders on child abuse, if you ask me.

Even more pathetic are the parents who watched the dog owner’s behavior without asking him to stop - or remove their children from the scene.

The dog was not *being a dog* he did not instinctively hunt down the rabbit - he was being provoked by his owner.

That ain’t nature at work - it is sadism.

I’d have to know the specifics of the “taunt” to make a judgement call on that, but I think jail time is excessive. Jail isn’t a form of punishment for every behavior people don’t like, and it’s not an effective deterrent in any case. It’s an overused waste of tax-payer money.

The dog killed on command from a human. There was nothing “natural” about it. The dog was a well-disciplined tool.

If this fellow had reached down and killed the bunny with a knife, how would that be any different?

Now, I am not going to say that the bunny has rights or that killing vermin should be illegal. I think a lot of bad law starts that way. I am just saying that folks shouldn’t be jerks.

The dog ignored the rabbit. He ordered it to go after it and stood laughing and smiling. You defend a jerk who terrorized kids?

It says in the article that the parents were at a game and the girls were allowed to go to the wooded section of the park to look for rabbits.

“Now, I am not going to say that the bunny has rights or that killing vermin should be illegal. I think a lot of bad law starts that way. I am just saying that folks shouldn’t be jerks.”

Agreed. I don’t condone him doing it, I’m not for criminal charges for killing a wild animal, unless that was a specific law of the state. But everyone’s entitled to their opinion. It’s a slippery slope to outlawing things in the name of “Child abuse.” Remember that the U.N. is trying to outlaw homeschooling as child abuse, and there are MANY who share that “feeling.”

It’s a dangerous (and in my opinion erroneous) path, and I’m not willing to take it.

They didn’t mention the breed so it wasn’t a pitbull.

They couldn’t even mislabel it so it probably was a lab.
