Is Mary not a Virgin? The German Bishops’ New Bible Translation Leaves it... Unclear

GERMANY, September 21, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The German Bishops have presented a new “Unified Translation” of the Bible that follows a significant modernization of the language and will be binding for all German-speaking areas starting in 2017.

On Tuesday, the German Bishops Conference (DBK) presented in Fulda the fruit of many years of scientific work: a new edition of the so-called “Unified Translation" (Einheitsübersetzung) of the Bible into German. It’s called “unified” because, from the original published from 1962 onward, these editions are supposed to be used ecumenically, unifying Catholics and Protestants in Germany. The original aim, however, was thwarted in 2005 when Protestants reverted to the Luther translation.

The leader of the research project was the bishop (now emeritus) of Erfurt, Joachim Wanke, who explained that the new edition is a “moderate revision” of the older text. Wanke added that a translation is always also an interpretation. The new edition shows more “braveness” to present “biblical jargon,” he said, reported by kath.net.

According to Jewish tradition, the personal names of God cannot be pronounced, so “Yahweh” is substituted by “Lord” in the new edition. In fact, every paragraph has a change, explained Michael Theobald, president of the German Bible Association.

When the apostle Paul calls two new followers, they are not two men anymore, Andronicus and Junias; rather, a new discovery showed that apparently it was one man and one woman, hence Andronicus and Junia. This led to the discussion that the word “apostle” must be applied to women as well as men (Author’s note: In German, different genders of the word exist and usually gender-ideologists insist on using male and female forms).

Other changes are more ideological.

Most frightening is the change to the iconic Isaiah passage (7:14): “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son”.....

They are not cousins as there is a specific word for cousins in the Greek.

There are two Greek words that mean cousin found in the New Testament books. Anepsios is found only once and is defined as cousin or nephew (translated sister's son in KJV). Suggenes and its cousins are found twelve times (nice round number) and are translated in the KJV as kin, cousin, cousins, kinsfolk, kinsman, and kinsmen.

The Apostle Paul had a lot of them, as evidenced in two Catholic chapters of Romans, Sixteen and Nine.

In Rms 16 Paul records the usage of συγγενὴς three times.

Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen...Rms 16:7

Greet Herodian, my kinsman. Rms 16:11

Timothy, my fellow worker greets you, and Lucius and Jason and Sosipatar, my kinsmen. Rms 16:21

So you're ok with how Paul identifies these individuals by name and how he views them.

Yet when we go to Galatians 1:19 and Paul calls James, the Lord's brother, you don't buy it.

εἰ μὴ Ἰάκωβον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τοῦ κυρίου

if not James, the brother of the Lord

τοῦ κυρίου is genitive case indicating possession.

James is the Lord's brother.

The catholic rules of Bible interpretation defy any accepted standard.

Well, I’m glad I picked up the 1980 edition of the Die Bibel when I was last in Germany. And, by the way, “Einheitsübersetzung” should be translated as “Standard Translation” rather than “Unified Translation”.

Galatians uses adelphon for brother; it occurs some 343 times in the New Testament. Is it your position that it always means two brothers have the same physical parents ? Did the Apostle Paul have a brother named Titus who was not Jewish ?

Paul was from the tribe of Benjamin, not Judah.

Paul was from the tribe of Benjamin, not Judah.

Are you trying to claim the Apostle Paul was not Jewish ?

I am telling you Paul wrote that he was from the tribe of Benjamin. NOT Judah. There were 12 tribes, each named, and named individually as penned by Moses as to what their inheritance would be. Paul lived in the land of Judah, but his ancestry came from the tribe of Benjamin. Course Paul was also a Roman citizen.

‘It’s called “unified” because, from the original published from 1962 onward, these editions are supposed to be used ecumenically, unifying Catholics and Protestants in Germany.’ Odd how the author titles it Unified but puts the term for standard/or astanda4rdized in parenthesis.

What is the relevance of his tribe ? Do you realize he also wrote that he is a Jew ?

...."The Greek texts from which everyone works are translations"....

The way I understand it was the 70 scholars were gathered together with the Hebrew texts and the Jews spoke with the translators to pick the most descriptive Greek word that matched what the Hebrew said. Scribes and Pharisee's had studied the Scriptures for thousands of years to set the meaning of what was given. They would describe what they believed the phrases said and chose the Greek that best described it. In my studies, I use several sources to decide what is true. For instance, Nimrod was said to be a good hunter, but what seems to be lost to Christians that Jews believe is that he was a hunter of men, not animals. Reading a Jewish study Bible differs in many instances of what the generic Christian is taught. The Scriptures are perfect, but the translations is where we find differences. If we just want to read a Bible, many will get the meaning across to the reader, but to STUDY the Bible, we need to get as close to the original as possible. The vast majority don't spend our lives studying Hebrew and Greek with Aramaic thrown in. Some trust has to be formed along the way.

Hence, “Standard” not “Unified”. The American Bishops are now planning the same thing for the NABRE - a standard edition to be used in liturgy, study, published works and catechesis, etc.

I'll stand with those guys on this point.

A fair weather friend, I see? You'll "stand" with them when they agree with you but toss them under the bus should they not. What makes them correct on this point but heretics on the doctrine of sola Scripture, sola fide, etc.?

Did Almighty God forbid the Jews to abstain from carnal relations at certain times or did He not?

If Christ had siblings, where were they at the foot of the Cross with His Mother?

John the Baptist, Christ’s cousin, was at the Cross with the Blessed Mother. Where were all these siblings? And why did Christ entrust His Mother to His cousin and not a sibling?

Yes, He did.

Where did God forbid Joseph from doing that?

On the contrary, God sent the message to him to not be afraid to take Mary AS HIS WIFE.

Do you think that God didn’t or doesn’t understand what that means? What the full implications of that are?

And just where does Scripture tell us that the perpetual virginity of Mary is crucial to our salvation?

Anyone who willfully refuses to listen to *whatever* God teaches through the Church loses their salvation. Period. Heresy is a grave, grave sin.
