The Ark: Could Noah's Tale Be True?

The new film "Noah" stars Russell Crowe as the man chosen by God to collect pairs of Earth's animals on a massive ark to save them from a global flood. The film, which opened March 28, is sizing up to be a Biblical blockbuster, replete with star power and stunning special effects. But how realistic is it?

While many people consider the story of Noah's Ark merely an instructive myth or parable about God's punishment for man's wickedness, others believe that the story is historically accurate. To them, Noah's tale describes events that really happened only a few thousand years ago.

It's been seen, filmed, studied, and documented.



In my opinion, “Jewish atheist” Dr Irving Finkel created this "FAKE" tablet to make fun of the religion he despises.

" The story of Noah’s Ark has always captivated the minds of children. Many have walked animal miniatures two-by-two into toy boats, as they imagine the vessel that saved believers from 40 rainy days and nights of flood.

But it is a story that does not hold water with Dr Irving Finkel, the British Museum curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia. Dr Finkel has decoded a 4,000-year-old terracotta-coloured tablet that purports to give the exact measurements of the Ark — long before the biblical account was written.

This “ark” is circular, like a coracle boat, takes up half a football pitch and is enclosed in a length of rope that would reach from London to Edinburgh. “It didn’t have to go in any direction, it just had to float and survive the flood,” he says pointing to the cuneiform marks, as if I was able to read the ancient language.

He believes that the Judeans, taken to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar II, incorporated Babylonian mythology into the Torah, but gave the stories a new, moral dimension. ... "

" The remains of Noah's Ark have been found 12,000ft up a Turkish mountain, it was claimed today.
A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers say carbon testing on remains found on Mount Ararat show they are 4,800 years old, around the time when the ark was said to be afloat.

But the group left themselves open to a critical backlash after they failed to reveal the location of their find or produce photographs of the exterior of the site.

The search for the physical remains of Noah's Ark has held a fascination for Christians, Jews and Muslims for hundreds of years. But despite various claims no scientific evidence has ever been found.

The team of 15 made the announcement of their find yesterday. They brought back from the site wooden remains and strands of rope which they believe was used for keeping animals.

Yeung Wing-cheung, a documentary filmmaker and member of the team from Hong Kong-based Noah's Ark Ministries International, said:
'It's not 100 per cent that it is Noah's Ark but we think it is 99.9 per cent that this is it.'

He said the structure had several compartments, some with wooden beams, which were believed to house animals. However early indications are it was a kind of cypress wood whereas the Bible says it was made of gopher wood.

Members of the Chinese team appeared with Turkish officials at a joint press conference on the evangelicals website where the potential importance of the discovery was hailed.

I certainly believe it was a true event. Heck, I've read of people finding seashells and shark fossils on tops of mountains. Just about every ancient civilization of which we have their recorded histories had stories that matched that event. Hard to think it could have been all a myth or legend.

Thing is the world is so far more evil than anything that happened during Noah’s time. Saying that, are we better morally than the people who died during that flood?

I certainly think we are getting to the point where every man did what was right in his own eyes, but not yet where their thoughts are only evil continually. When the redeemed are removed from the earth and the influence of the Holy Spirit is taken away, THEN that will happen very quickly. God said he would never again destroy the earth with water, but he didn't say anything about fire.

What is your view? Metaphor, fable, true story? Where is the line drawn on what is miraculously true?

I’ve seen folks say without a doubt the 10 commandments are fact and not legend or metaphor. Yet they can’t accept the literal miracles of the Egyptian plagues and the Red Sea crossing. Yet in the same book we have the Law.

Seems if God can gather the animals and make the flood, He can control the animals for 6 weeks or so.

Iriqoius Indians, Aztecs (not 100% sure which people/group,maybe Mayan) also have virtually the same historical tales of some such event. Don’t know what it means but it was eerie to hear it related.

Unlikely, since then the story would be about how Noah had to slowly migrate uphill a few dozen miles. Almost every culture with a flood legend (and it is nearly a universal story all around the world) speaks of the survivors using a boat of some kind, not walking away from very slowly rising water.

Any oxygen reduction that would prevent the lighting of fires would also prevent Noah from living.

The flood stories don’t by any means always have a boat in it. Many of them *don’t*.

Sometimes I hear people talking about things like where all the water came from, or where it went afterward. Hello?! If God exists, He can create or destroy matter as needed. He has no need for raw materials or waste disposal.

I'm similarly perplexed by people who accept the 'red letter' sayings of Jesus in the gospels, but do not consider the same writers & documents to be reliable in other respects.
