Pope Says, Jesus 'Pretends'
Fr. Ray Blake's Blog ^ | 12/2/13 | Fr. Ray Blake

Jes·u·it·i·cal

adjective

of or pertaining to Jesuits or Jesuitism.
( often lowercase ) practicing casuistry or equivocation;
using subtle or oversubtle reasoning; crafty; sly; intriguing.

Or as the say you can take the Jesuit out of the Jesuits but not the Jesuit out of the Jesuit.

On Saturday, Radio Vatican said Pope Francis had said,

“In the Gospel, Jesus does not become angry, but pretends to when the disciples do not understand him,”

The ancient Fathers would baulk at such a suggestion, I can't think of one who would be be comfortable with the idea that the Gospels did not reveal the plain meaning of what Jesus said and did, it is only the Jesuits of the 17th century who would begin to suggest otherwise.

There is no suggestion in the Gospels that Jesus feigns, or pretends anything. On the contrary he is the 'Truth'. He says, "Let your 'yes' mean 'yes' and your 'no' mean 'no'". His Kingdom stands in contradistinction to that of the kingdom of the Father of Lies.

If Jesus really does 'pretend' to be angry but isn't really what else does he pretend? Is he really just 'acting' in other emotional responses, when he sighs, when he weeps, when he rails against the Pharisees. Is he really grinning broadly when he calls Simon Peter, 'Satan'?

I do not agree with Pope Francis on this, we do not need smiley or angry face marks to interpret the Gospels. Perhaps this says more about the Pope than it does about Jesus. Rather than Jesus pretending, is Pope Francis 'pretending'? After all if one believes the Son of God can and does 'pretend', why shouldn't the Pope? And if the Pope can 'pretend', why not the Church?

This is the type of thing a person who isn’t a Bible-believing “Christian” would come up with. For a Jesuit who shot up the ranks when and where Bergoglio did, this should probably be considered a mild statement.

Judging by this guy’s track record so far, he’ll keep exposing himself the more he opens his mouth which is a good thing. The church isn’t a bunch of buildings owned by a certain religious sect, it’s the body of true believers who can attend services at any number of different denominations or perhaps not attend any formal services at all.

I’m Catholic and it pains me so to hear someone who I am “presuming” to be Christian to project so much hate (Satan loves such division among the religions).

I hope that the Lord will soften your heart, please read John 6:43-68, which I believe explains why we Catholics believe that the Holy Eucharist is the body of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Pope doesn’t pray “to” Mary; he simple asks her to pray for him.

Ever ask anyone to pray for you? Same thing.

Why are you, a non-Catholic, trying to tell us what the Magisterium does or doesn’t do?

In my mind, your accusations don’t hold water.

JP2 and B16 never kept people guessing as to what they meant. And they were way to smart to let the liberals think they were one of them. Francis just talks to much and is trying to hard to make people like him. He’s not changing anything in the church because he can’t change anything, but he sure give the libs and Catholic bashers something to talk about.
It’s getting to be kind of funny. He can’t say a complete sentence without some guy character who thinks he’s Biblical scholar calling him to task.

If you’re not a Catholic what gives you the right to say anything about the Catholic Church? Criticize your own faith and clean it up.

Bible believers don’t ask the dead or those physically absent for anything because we are not clairvoyant and have no interest in becoming a medium to the spirit world. Only God has the ability to hear the prayers of the billions of people who petition Him. So it is a ridiculous claim that you are just asking for someone else to pray. You have only images... deaf, mute, blind images to talk to. They don’t hear you. She is not sitting in the seat beside you at church. You cannot call her on her cell phone. If she was alive, she could not accommodate millions of Catholics trying to follow these foolish doctrines either.

To my dear Catholic bashers, is the parent that disciplines the toddler truly angry?

And now the Vatican Radio link says this:

“In the Gospel, Jesus does become angry, but pretends to when the disciples do not understand him.

They took out the "not". But of course this quote now makes no sense. What is with all of the editing at the Vatican websites? Removing interviews, changing formats, editing quotes. They don't know what to do with this guy.

As for the comment about the Pope should not do these things, I think by him doing these things we are seeing how he really thinks.

Lay person? The Pope has no authority that I do not have in Christ. The Pope is not more important to God than any other person. I find your comment disturbing because if many people actually think your way there will be a lot of blind people being led by the blind.

The word Pope Francis spoke WAS “capitalism.” But whereas Americans have confused “capitalism” with “free markets,” Europeans use the word as we would use the word, “plutocracy.” (Reagan AWLAYS spoke of free markets; I was very concerned when the Bushes and Clinton spoke of bringing “capitalism” to China, etc.)

Capitalism is the rule by money, and is idolatry. China is capitalist, but it is not free. The U.S., once a free market, is still capitalist, but no longer free.

That said, I am completely scandalized by the Pope’s abandonment of the principle of subsidiarity, a Catholic social doctrine which directly opposes statism.

Maybe Jesus was just kidding about the whole “This is my body” thing.

Thank you for the well stated distinction.

“My kingdom is not of this world” means something. The Apostles had difficulty getting that right. It’s such a radical concept that the human mind rebels against it. The last surviving Apostle had something very valuable to say.

1 John 2:15-17

King James Version (KJV)

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Translating Spanish to Latin (or Italian) to English, you can get some awkward constructions, but it does make perfect sense:

“Jesus does become angry (at times), but (in this case, he merely) pretends to when the disciples do not understand him.”
