Things happen so slowly that they do not register in our minds much.

And, when they are, like the multiple ice ages that have come and gone on Earth, the result is, to use a simple term - chaotic.
The real reason the Earth is slowing down is because of the Moon. The Moon’s gravity causes tides as the Earth spins below it. The drag of water causes the Earth to spin more slowly.
