So What's the Difference Between Now and When I Grew Up?
vanity | Feb 15, 2018 | ML/NJ

I don't know. I'm asking.

I graduated high school in 1964. During the entire time I was in school Wikipedia reports that there was one incident where three people were killed in US schools, and none where two people were killed. There was an average somewhere between one and two incidents a year where one was killed.

Guns were MUCH MORE AVAILABLE then. Schools had rifle teams. I shot an untethered .22 at Coney Island. I shot guns at Boy Scout Camp. Anyone who thinks that more gun restrictions now would help is oblivious to this.

We also played with make-believe guns. My cap pistols looked like real guns. We played Cowboys and Indians. I'm not a fan of the shoot-em up video games, but it's hard to see how they are very different from the games I played.

So, what's different? Movies and TV shows are different. Respect for the US is different. Victim mentality is different. Respect for religion is different. There's a lot more welfare and a lot more taxes. Manners are different, or non-existent. I think government schools are different, but I haven't been in one for 50+ years so I'm just guessing.

We need to return to what worked. Continuing with more great solutions that make things worse strikes me as the wrong way to approach the problem we have.

"God has given us up."

He helped perform a miracle on November 8, 2016 though.

The internet allows for the lunatics to have access to a massive asylum where they feed their mental illness and prepare themselves for international “glory”.

Well, we had a series of “education reforms” that changed what was taught in schools and “revamped” teaching methods. Teachers have little interest in special needs kids, and the school systems are not suited for mainstreaming them.

Also, around 1970, a series of court actions forced mental institutions to release anyone not “committed” based on their rights. It became very hard to get custodial care (or whatever the term is), leaving it up to the family but ultimately the police to deal with seriously mentally compromised people. These folks that used to be in State Hospitals are now on the street and in our schools, and we can’t lock them up until after they kill a dozen or so people. The incipient killers are “mainstreamed” in with the rest of us.

Another factor may be that the media working with the antis continually advise unstable people that their story will be told, a huge effort will be spent on their manifestos (what could the motive have been?), the evildoers name will be repeated a thousand times per day, possibly even by the President, if they follow certain rules as to weapon type and location (we didn’t hear much about the Navy Yard shooter, he used a three-shot pump shotgun I believe- not much media amplification).

It’s not simple but I think I hit three reasons.

To be fair, there was a lot of malaise, isolation, and depression in women of postwar suburbia that stirred up the feminist rage in the first place. Again, before my time, but how it’s been recounted to me by the women in my life who lived before me...

But then the “rage” catapulted into a slew of counter-productive measures like legalized abortion, rampant sexual recklessness, etc...

Abortion is mass murder. We’re a very violent society to begin with...

In 1967 I remember riding the school bus with kids bringing their shotguns and rifles on the bus for the school gun club, and this was junior high.

And at the start of deer season there were several high powered rifles on board.

PROZAC!!!

It makes everything and anything ok. I knew co-workers who started it and I was really shocked by the change. Talking to one of them was like having a razor blade waved in my face.

The prescribers of Prozac to people who do crimes should also be held accountable - somehow.

“3. Incessant media coverage of bullsh!t that drives up anxiety in the general public. “

A media that TRIES to increase fear and anxiety to force societal and cultural change.

Playing Cowboys and Indians ( or variations on that theme ) was "PLAY" and we, as kids knew that.

Today, more and more kids seem to "think" that video games are somehow "real" and spend far more time being solitary, playing these games, than we ever did just playing...plus we played with others. Face to face reality keeps kids grounded, but also helps to keep a child's imagination alive.

When we were growing up, even with movie newsreels about wars, we weren't bombarded by images of killings of any kind. There were ADULT movies ( and I'm not talking about porn! )and then there were movies that were fine for kids to see. Parents used to be VERY careful about what movies kids saw; ditto for T.V. shows.

The vast majority of kids, from all races, religions, social strata lived in two parent ( a biological mother & father ) home. That's sadly no longer the case.

THERE WERE RULES!

But there weren't "helicopter" parents.

Pop culture was vastly different back then! Can you remember any songs that promoted killing cops? I can't and I have an excellent memory.

Back then there were still insane asylums and yes, there were kids in them. Now? Now they live at home and sometimes shoot up other kids & teachers.

I agree. I graduated HS in ‘64 also, and what you describe is true. The difference is that in 1964, the norm was intact two parent families, active in their faith, and unified in the consensus that our culture was based on virtue.

Familes that are stable and intact, and who take care of their children, produce no mass killers. Only the Progressive ideal leads to slaughter.

Feminism marginalized, disenfranchised, and eviscerated fatherhood.

Part of the problem is that a very large percentage of kids especially boys are put on SSRI’s (Prozac, Zoloft etc etc) which can exaggerate their conditions.

Plus divorced and single parents are far greater in degree. Lack of good role models too. The kids grow up confused and conflicted with all the social crapola.

A hyper-scientific approach to “mental illness” rather than a holistic, spiritual understanding of the human person, human soul, in relation to GOD — also not good. :(

Most of these shooters were on some form of medication meant to “cure” them...

diversity of the population leads to an unsettled population, disorder and confusion which leads to family breakdowns and to all kinds of mental problems.

That is why families should follow the agrarian model with both mother and father working from home - and raising their daughters and sons - throughout each day.

Something this screwed up usually has multiple causes, I'll toss a few out.

- Turning away from faith

- Liberalization of schools

- Social media where like-minded creeps can find each other

- Horrid internet etiquitte where personal attacks and insults are the norm

- Breakdown of nuclear family

- Ever-more depraved entertainment

- Psychotropic drugs.

I figure that's a good start.

Feminism didn’t drive moms out of the house. There was no feminism in 1964. What drove women out of the house was the rise in taxes to the degree that fewer families could survive on one income. Women largely left the labor force after WWII, but returned when social redistribution, under the guise of the “Great Society”, caused taxes to begin to bite.
