Schumer: Democrats will filibuster Gorsuch nomination
Washington Post ^ | March 23 | Ed O'Keefe, Robert Barnes and Ann E. Marimow

Posted on 03/23/2017 8:11:43 AM PDT by PghBaldy

As the Senate Judiciary Committee was hearing from witnesses for and against Judge Neil Gorsuch, his Supreme Court nomination was delivered a critical blow: Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he would join with other Democrats in filibustering Gorsuch — a move that would require at least 60 senators to vote to end debate on the nomination.

The Gorsuch nomination represents the perfect storm to get rid of the filibuster period. If the Dems can filibuster someone as qualified and experienced as him, then the filibuster is indefensible. As a judge, Gorsuch sided with the majority opinion 97% of the time and 99% of his decisions that were appealed were reaffirmed by the higher court. He deserves an up and down vote.

The filibuster should be eliminated completely for all legislation. Harry Reid provided the predicate and now the GOP must finish the sentence.

This is exactly right - no need to discuss nuclear or not. Harry Reid ended that debate for all time.

Just tell the people that the senate will comfirm Gorsuch. Leave it to the dems to xplain their loss

.... The Trump Administration is going to have to be absolutely ruthless and tough for every single thing that Trump wants to do during his entire term in office ... So how about they learn Right Now instead of wasting this country’s time, that they are going to have to be Ram every single policy through.

What you write is accurate but it doesn’t make it right in accordance with founding principles.

Following Reid’s corruption of Congress by treating his actions as precedent would be similar to making it customary to knock down a business’s doors because many don’t like the regular opening time.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

In my view, Reid has started down the road to destroying the filibuster leading Congress to form a mob-ruled democracy. That means for practical purposes, the republican form of government is lost.

Making its way into the Article V State Amendment Process or Convention of States aka Assembly of States is a proposal that repairs the damage done by Reid and members that follow his lead. The proposal looks like this:

************************************************
AMENDMENT XXVIII (’State Suffrage’)

To restore effective suffrage of State Legislatures to Congress, the following amendment is proposed:

************************************************
Section 1.
A Senator in Congress shall be subject to recall by their respective state legislature or by voter referendum in their respective state.

Section 2.
Term limits for Senators in Congress shall be set by vote in their respective state legislatures but in no case shall be set less than twelve years nor more than eighteen years.

Section 3:
The seventeenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.

************************************************

Trump likes to win.

And he will. But he's been sucked into this insane Ryan/Wonk 3-step crap sandwich, and the Which way will Mitch go Senate. The GOP is showing they are incompetent leaders. Trump needs to fire them and bring in his own leaders.

BTW, I'm totally with you on the 17th Amendment.

Excellent...get it over with now and go nuclear. New precedent established.

The filibuster ends here, forever.

No they won’t. They never do. It’s always the same old crap with these people, the country be damned. They all have the dirty goods on each other. They’re always playing backroom deals. They are the most worthless, useless, digustingly self-serving bunch of loathsome, greedy, selfish, lying heep of snakes. Vile human beings! (Well, maybe not all, but enough in leadership or near leadership positions that make it nothing more than a pit of vipors for the rest.)

Come on folks, Gorsuch will be confirmed. I’m no fan of McConnell, but he will invoke the nuclear option if he has to, otherwise no conservative will ever be confirmed to the SC. Schemer has to do this because the lib base is crazy mad. My guess is that 8 Dems from red states invoke cloture nd this becomes a non-issue. This isn’t a fight that works to their benefit

Boy would I love it if WikiLieaks blew the lid off of PizzaGate right about now.
Schumer, McLame, DiFi, Hillary of course; I hear they are all involved in it.

There are naive & foolish advocates of ever greater dependence on Government. But in Schumer, as in Obama, we have one who--while far from a serious intellect--is neither naive or simply foolish. He was the point man, in the House in the 1990s, for trying to justify Janet Reno's war on the religious compound outside of Waco. He has pranced in parades where the prancers were flaunting offensive practices (not for tolerance, as perhaps claimed, but clearly with intention to offend. He has committed to trying to block Conservative legislation & appointments, without even considering the issues & arguments, for the sole purpose of obstruction.

I suspect that if one looks into it, they will find that Senator Schumer has received funds in the recent past from wealthy sociopaths, such has George Soros.

Chuck Schumer wants to play "hard ball." Well, let us see.

Faced with such vicious obstructionism directed at our Constitutional form of Government--and which of Chuckie boy's recent anti-Trump stands could not be classified as just that--President Trump needs to hit back, not in spite but in order to accomplish the agenda for which he was elected.

1. The infra-structure restoration project, played from a typical Washington political prospective, would enable the Administration to exert very powerful influence on many Democratic Senators, to simply play fair on the Gorsuch nomination. (You spit in our eyes, against a man unquestionably superbly qualified, and you collapsing bridges on Federal Highways, will go to the end of the line, in repair or replacement priority.)

2. Military bases? There are enough Federal lands outside of any particular State, which is not in States where the Senator is trying to prevent having a Supreme Court that really supports our Constitutional heritage.

3. Where we purchase equipment, supplies & provisions? In play!

I just touch on the possibilities for Republicans to play the sort of games that the Democratic Left has been playing to America's detriment since FDR. And we would be playing the game to America's benefit, not detriment.

Chuckie boy has been floating along because of a PC media that imbibes the same fantasy views of American culture--America's priorities, values & identity. It is time that we deliver a message that his parents should have when he was younger. "You do not get to redefine reality to please the sociopathic enemies of you fellow countrymen. You are not a law unto yourself."

McConnell is on the record saying Gorsuch will be approved by the Senate. If he lets a filibuster kill the nomination he will be finished as leader. Don't worry, the nomination will go through, after much huffing and puffing.

That means they’ll filibuster anyone, so time for the nuke option to end the filibuster for good.

Great idea.

I agree with you on the necessity for prosecutions; however enforcing the law is never "extreme." And the abject fear of Trump by many indicates to me that prosecutions of some corrupt politicians may be looming.

As for the filibuster and its original intent to salvage some of the Senate's pre-17th Amendment purpose (to represent the States), that ship sailed with Mike Mansfield and sank with Harry Reid. The old gentlemen's agreement was between men who wanted the best for their country, but has devolved into today's faux-filibuster which only ensures the UniParty gets its way. And now, Frances Fox Piven has announced the strategy to "Throw Sand in the Gears of Everything." We are in the late stage of an existential fight.

I think this is great news. It tells the voters exactly who needs to be voted out in the next election. Not all of the Senators will be up for re-election in 2018, but I’m betting those who are will be squirming. Maybe only those in “safe” seats will participate in the filibuster.

In any case, we find out who the rabid lunatics are.
