Life Expectancy In U.S. Drops For First Time In Decades, Report Finds

One of the fundamental ways scientists measure the well-being of a nation is tracking the rate at which its citizens die and how long they can be expected to live.

So the news out of the federal government Thursday is disturbing: The overall U.S. death rate has increased for the first time in a decade, according to an analysis of the latest data. And that led to a drop in overall life expectancy for the first time since 1993

Most notably, the overall death rate for Americans increased because mortality from heart disease and stroke increased after declining for years. Deaths were also up from Alzheimer's disease, respiratory disease, kidney disease and diabetes. More Americans also died from unintentional injuries and suicide. In all, the decline was driven by increases in deaths from eight of the top 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.

"When you see increases in so many of the leading causes of death, it's difficult to pinpoint one particular cause as the culprit," Anderson says.

Perhaps, but the over all decrease is not hugely significant, so it is most likely contributed to natural causes.

“On average, the overall life expectancy, for someone born in 2015, fell from 78.9 years to 78.8 years. The life expectancy for the average American man fell two-tenths of a year — from 76.5 to 76.3. For women, it dropped one-tenth — from 81.3 to 81.2 years.”

We have illegals among us who likely don't count as “Americans” in this review. Any citizen killed by an illegal did not die as a result of citizen-induced death.

Add those all up and you have an impact on US citizen life expectancy, too.

Deaths from heart disease — the nation’s No. 1 killer — dropped significantly, and that alone added a year to white life expectancy. Nearly one more year was added because of falling death rates from cancer, stroke, and motor vehicle crashes, the researchers found.

But then drugs and alcohol subtracted about 4 months from life expectancy, according to Kenneth Kochanek, a CDC statistician who was the report’s lead author. No other cause of death had a bigger negative impact, he said...

It’s amazing that we don’t count the million or so people who never make it out of the womb, but obsess over a two or three month drop in life expectancy among the elderly. Those who are killed before birth don’t have the chance to make good or bad lifestyle choices.

Obese people who go for low carb diets (which I think is what you are talking about) tend to lose weight and improve their blood markers.

That is not exactly what I am talking about. However "low carb diet" is a euphemism for high fat, high protein diet. Obese people do tend to lose weight (temporarily) on high protein high fat fad diets and I am sure that there are many studies by advocates of these diets that show certain “blood markers” improving. But the mortality rate from heart disease of obese people whose weight is being controlled by these types of diets is very high.

The sad thing is that once a person loses weight while continuing to consume bacon, smoked meats, and all the other delectable treats allowed on a high protein, high fat diet they become a true believer. From that point forward they will construct complex lines of reasoning to convince themselves that their diet choices actually are good for them despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. They will literally ignore the advices given to them by their doctors and other health-care providers until the day that they drop over dead. Just about everyone middle aged and beyond has known at least one person that fits this description. In my case, I have known a bunch.

I had a very good friend who was over 300lbs who lost 50lbs while on a “high protein diet”. After that he became a true believer and could argue anyone here under the table about the health benefits high protein high fat diet. He was one of the smartest and most thoughtful persons that I have ever known. He loved bacon and smoked meats. He was very active on meat smoking forums. When I met him at my gun club he was heavy but very active and he loved to hunt. I even helped him construct a fancy smoker out of an old refrigerator.

After a while despite sticking with the “high protein” lifestyle where he ate almost nothing but the meats which he loved so much, he started gaining back all the weight he had lost. He began having severe health problems. He had to give up hunting. He couldn't walk around the house without getting winded. His doctors advised him to switch to a more normal diet, but he ignored this advice and found a different doctor and spoke of them with derision. "My doctors haven't kept up on the latest studies and research!" he would exclaim. "They don't know what they are talking about!"

When I would confront him about my concerns for his health, he would assure me that all of his “stats” were great and that all of his male relatives who hadn't been killed by accidents or in the military had lived into their 80s and beyond. I don't need to tell anyone here how this turned out do I? Everyone here knows because the results of his choices were as obvious as what happens when you run your pickup truck into a concrete pillar on the freeway.

There are no shortcuts in life. If you become inactive and eat a lot more calories than you need whether they come from carbohydrates, fats, or proteins you will gain weight. If your excess calories come largely from saturated animal fats you are putting yourself at much greater risk for heart disease. This is a fact which even the good Dr. Atkins found out about the hard way. Are there other factors which contribute to the early demise of fat people? Obviously! But all the studies in the world won't change that fact that high protein, high fat diets put people at greater risk for heart disease, regardless of your "blood markers". But if you are a true believer that lost 50lbs like my friend or even more, there is nothing that I or anyone else can tell you that will change your mind.

No evidence? No evidence of what? That my friend died of a massive heart attack after putting himself at risk by clogging the arteries that were there to supply his heart with blood? That is what he died from. You do not believe that his diet, obesity, and lack of exercise contributed to his early demise? Surely you are joking?

Here are the recommendations from the American Heart Association. But I suppose that you “will just have to disagree” with them as well. They have spent billions of dollars paying doctors and scientists to discover why people die from heart disease.
