Life Expectancy In U.S. Drops For First Time In Decades, Report Finds

One of the fundamental ways scientists measure the well-being of a nation is tracking the rate at which its citizens die and how long they can be expected to live.

So the news out of the federal government Thursday is disturbing: The overall U.S. death rate has increased for the first time in a decade, according to an analysis of the latest data. And that led to a drop in overall life expectancy for the first time since 1993

Most notably, the overall death rate for Americans increased because mortality from heart disease and stroke increased after declining for years. Deaths were also up from Alzheimer's disease, respiratory disease, kidney disease and diabetes. More Americans also died from unintentional injuries and suicide. In all, the decline was driven by increases in deaths from eight of the top 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.

"When you see increases in so many of the leading causes of death, it's difficult to pinpoint one particular cause as the culprit," Anderson says.

“Obamacare in action.”

That plus the incredibly crappy economy the past 8 years which has had a huge impact on people’s wellbeing.

Obamacare in action.

In many ways it is actually the Obama economy in action. When people lose a feeling of usefulness and slip into poverty through job loss they sometimes lose the will to live.

Not quite. It's from obscene prices, crap ripoff insurance and or no insurance due to sky high prices, government involvement etc.

When i was kid, no one talked about insurance. Everyone seemed to be covered in their jobs, jobs which actually lasted until people retired, then they received a company retirement. Those days are long gone. A thing of past.

Actually, as an insurance statistic, in the US, unless you get killed in a car wreck, or by a gang member, you'll probably live to a ripe old age.

Gang murders are so prevalent that they skew the life expectancy stats.

this has been coming on for awhile now- Americans are living much cushier lifestyles- and aren’t eating as well any longer- and aren’t working nearly as hard as they used to on average-

The reason the french were able to live long lives while eating fats, lard, grease etc- drinking, smoking, loads of sweets etc- is because they would have their big meal at lunch and work it off for the rest of the workday- then have a light meal for dinner

We get home from work- have a large meal for supper, Drink a ton of soda- and plunk ourselves on the couch- many millenials still live at home- don’t have jobs, or just part time jobs- and are basically couch potatoes - and the obese crowds are much larger today than they used to be- and again even though folks were obese back when- they worked like dogs and wre basically fit back then

I was wondering about that. There is been an increase in the number of deaths from heroin (and relatives of heroin) in the state of Maine this past year. More pure stuff is available.

Could be Obamacare, but don’t forget all the illegals, and terrorists Obama allowed into the country to kill and maim us.

The age pyramid is changing with a growing Boomer cohort that is entering their elder years. The large immigrant population, both legally and illegally entering the country, surely has an impact. Diseases that were once eradicated are coming back due to the free movement of people from around the world thanks to aggressive refugee resettlement. The promotion of euthanasia isn’t healthy either, but many are seeing that as a viable option due to the promotion of helpless/hopeless/worthless in the eyes of the State.
Just some possibilities that no one seems to be taking seriously in the public health field.

[[More Americans also died from unintentional injuries and suicide.]]

Misleading- more Americans may have died, but hte fact is that there are significantly more Americans in the US than a decade ago too-

To be accurate and show an actual increase- the article should have stated the % of Americans dying-

We had a terrible Opiubama scourge over the last eight years.

E. R.s should see fewer overdoses now.

much of it has to do with the boomers living unhealthy lifestyles- as ‘deaths from diabetes is up’ ‘strokes, heart disease’ etc-

the lifestyle changes are probably the biggest contributing factor- theoretically, the death rates should be climbing again somewhat since less people are smoking these days due to prohibitive high prices’ That’ should’ increase longevity- but again- the lifestyle choices to not be so active offsets that-

I look around and see kids sitting in a house all day- overweight- texting or on the computer- this is a bad bad trend- I’m talking morbidly obese kids- sitting around all day- eating junk food- playing computer games- in the 70’s and 80’s and even somewhat into the 90’s (although kids started getting atari games and such and began spending way more time lazing around) parents worked hard- ate fairly well- and kids were always outside running around, playing- being creative- inventive etc- When i go to folkses homes today- the kids are plunked on the couch- all day- watching TV-

My folks had warned that the boomer age would result in the death age average dropping years ago- looks like it’s coming true-
