Life Expectancy In U.S. Drops For First Time In Decades, Report Finds

One of the fundamental ways scientists measure the well-being of a nation is tracking the rate at which its citizens die and how long they can be expected to live.

So the news out of the federal government Thursday is disturbing: The overall U.S. death rate has increased for the first time in a decade, according to an analysis of the latest data. And that led to a drop in overall life expectancy for the first time since 1993

Most notably, the overall death rate for Americans increased because mortality from heart disease and stroke increased after declining for years. Deaths were also up from Alzheimer's disease, respiratory disease, kidney disease and diabetes. More Americans also died from unintentional injuries and suicide. In all, the decline was driven by increases in deaths from eight of the top 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.

"When you see increases in so many of the leading causes of death, it's difficult to pinpoint one particular cause as the culprit," Anderson says.

Killing the middle class and punishing whitey had to have some health effects. It is time to try leftists and RINOs for treason.

Eight years of the country going hard left under Obama and the idiocracy the liberals have shoved down our throats has taken its toll. The country is a freaking psych ward. Who wants to live 100 years anyhow? The libs will take all your money and have you looking for work when you’re eighty years old.

and the obese crowds are much larger today than they used to be- and again even though folks were obese back when- they worked like dogs and were basically fit back then.

Your observations are dead on. I think that another issue is that high protein fad diets have been in vogue for over a decade now. This exacerbates the unhealthy affects of obesity. Heart disease especially has seen a dramatic increase especially among relatively young people.

The largest jump in deaths has been from heart disease. No one knows why the progress in combating heart disease has stopped. It may be from many factors. You are correct to give attention to our nation’s health care system that used to come from a healthy job market. People could get health care from insurance supplied by their employers. They could receive treatment for conditions that contributed to heart disease. Now, many Americans have no employment or inconsistent employment. It is hard to get consistent health care for heart disease if you have inconsistent insurance.

I given attention to the epidemic of deaths from opioids to suggest this too has affected the life expectancy. I know the numbers for 2016 opioid overdose deaths has not been released yet. But I suspect the numbers are above the 47,000 reported for 2015. As CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said, “Since 2000, the rate of deaths from drug overdoses has increased 137 percent.”

I might add, that the use of drugs, like cocaine, meth and the opioids, are contributing to heart disease. And they may contribute to another killers we do not know about.

Overdoses? Why many are drawn to heroin becomes a link or pattern. It’s my experience most people with good jobs, incomes, decent healthcare etc, generally don’t start shooting junk. There are exceptions, but that’s generally the realm of those who have nothing going, are down and out, have little or no money, no jobs and certainly no healthcare, et al.

And don’t forget, with all this processed garbage food, tens of millions in the population are now diabetic. It’s an epidemic.

This is something I’ve been wanting to bring up myself.

With Diabetes, far too often it can cause kidney failure. Once you’re Stage 5, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare, even if you have insurance, since it’s pretty tough to lead a normal life while on dialysis and the cost is astronomical.

Dialysis centers are popping up all over the place these days. Be a good investment.

Which brings me to the point of pre-existing conditions. Pre-ACA, getting insurance with diabetes was almost impossible.

There’s a lot of diabetics coming on line now with a host of health issues in their future. I know some here hate the idea of any kind of government help here, but the fact is, left unchecked, we’ll be paying for them one way or the other in due time.

IMO, we need to address this and just call it what it is, an entitlement. But not helping them find health care to keep their health issues in check will just cost us more in the end.

Late and tired, don’t know if any of that made sense. But it’s been something bugging me since I have family with diabetes and an ex gf who is on dialysis.

That, and I’m borderline stage 4 kidney disease, myself.

Many jobs require drug testing and a yearly physical will detect drug use when they do a blood analysis. Yet, drug use is being found in all areas of the social strata. But having a job and health care insurance can put drug users back on the right track.

The down and outers you mentioned are also the dealers. Being a dealer is a risky business with the murderous violence which also affects the life expectancy. They probably would not be dealers if they had a decent job.

The bottom of the social strata are the homeless. The homeless in our area have created encampments that are virtual shooting galleries for drug addicts. They are going down and out on the fast track. If they could have jobs, maybe they wouldn’t have their self-destructive lifestyle.

It made perfect sense. Good comments. Btw, everyone seems to have family members or friends now who are diabetic. I attribute it to processed garbage food. It’s wide spread and growing.

Take care.

I agree. My parent’s generation never had the problem of diabetes like we have today. The problem comes from a increased incidence of obesity that results from the high availability of foods high in sugar and other carbohydrates. What our grandmothers would only cook for a Sunday dinner’s apple pie desert can now come easily from a multitude of sources 24 hours a day. And apple pie is just for starters. I think diabetes is one of the contributors to heart disease.

Not only Obamacare folks but the early retirement of our best physicians, along with the best and brightest avoiding medicine.

The great internists who integrated data and took time to make a correct diagnosis were forced out long ago. HMO medicine favors speed, not thought. This is the #1 reason people die in countries with Socialized Medicine, which we’ve become all but for the shouting.

Try finding a doctor who reads your whole chart then has the time, the intelligence and the incentive to make an accurate differential diagnosis.

banning smoking is the cause....

When serious discussion is allowed about the topic, it's an interesting one. Smoking has decreased while obesity and diabetes have increased. Add to that mix those who take drugs that often kill them at an early age instead of smoking cigarettes, which most people have given up before smoking kills them. Then there's ObamaCare, with its too easy access to pharmaceuticals that is enabling bad behaviors.
