It’s not unreasonable. Entertainment usually comes with alcohol, and power consumption. In many of the old factory buildings in MA, that would be enough to burn the place down. The electric systems are 100 years old in some of these places.
Just checked the headlines at SFgate.com
Didn’t have permits,
Owner wrote a controversial post.
Prayers for those affected.
Disinfect your computer.
Shooting the messenger.
Anyway, the owner did write something like “everything I worked for has gone up in flames”. That came off callous. I’m not sure if he even mentioned those who lost their lives and his children were safe in a hotel. They lived at that place it sounds like.
They didn’t have permits.
Derick Ion is the name of the owner. I’ve never heard of that last name before. Obviously, he’ll be sued big time.
The dirty little secret in Kalifornia is that hardly anyone obeys the laws or regulations. This is what happens when you over burden the populace with regulations and laws. They ignore even the good laws and regulations. The owner however, appears to have lacked the compassion or liability sense, to make the place safe. He is done for life now.
I looked at all the pictures of that place; I am not the Fire Marshall, but I would have had that place closed up and a “KEEP OUT, DERELICT BUILDING” sign posted on it.
Every city official, inspector and politician should be held personally responsible for the loss of life and sued into bankruptcy, then jailed for complicity.
And then the MSM would just say just a bunch of REDNECKS doing something stupid, to bad so sad.
I think they were cited several times.
but silly young irresponsible residents should have known better.
And their parents should have been there and insisted that they move.
It was reported around 70 to 100 people attended the “rave”, not exactly a large “rave” crowd by any standard
I guess the pics are of the first and second floor, by what I have read, the 2nd floor was built illegally, without permits or building plans. The city did flag it and the owner was suppose to address it. I guess he didn’t do anything since his last fire inspection.
It is sad because a fire alarm and a sprinkler system, I know, they are not cheap by any standard, would have saved people. Plus building to code and installing proper stairways and exits would have saved people as well.
Its sad to see that people lost there lives over someone’s pure negligence. It is like the owner did not even bother to even try to comply with codes.
CA is regulated to death with building, fire, and environmental codes. Yet these alt-artists types managed to convert an abandoned warehouse into their own little utopia and no one on the city council or in Sacramento batted an eyelash.
Having recently paid for building a house in CA, I can tell you that 99% of the lives saved in fires are the result of smoke alarms -- a relatively inexpensive system.
The requirement for sprinklers is driven by insurance companies. Sprinklers will save enough of the structure so that it can be repaired instead of replaced. This limits insurance company payouts and is greatly beneficial to them. Frequently, the owner of a building is better off with a total loss and a rebuild rather than a repair.
“The city did flag it and the owner was suppose to address it.”
My guess is that unless the owner died in the fire, he’s going to jail. Maybe some city inspector types, too.
The owner is alive and well and lamenting the loss of his business on Facebook. The commenters on his thread are furious with him, and a lot of apparent insider stuff is becoming public there. I get the impression that the owner is in hiding.

Not this fire probably, but too many unusual fires across America
Fires are an excellent way to cause massive death and destruction and strike fear into the hearts of Americans
Easy to do, hard to determine the cause...
They’ll root him out.
I can’t imagine how anyone could allow people to occupy such a dangerous building. It’s one thing if you have a junky antique shop, but that mess...
Hey, I’m no hippy pole smoker, but I thought your photo you posted was pretty neat.
Bad art is still art!
I do like the rug!!! LOL. The rickety stairs actually remind me of this old house I lived in back in the day. There were about 6 of us living there. The only good thing is it cost us nothing because the father of one of the guys living there was the owner. You always felt like they were going to collapse at any moment. I think I ended up staying there for like 3 or 4 months, before I convinced myself I had to get a place that was more habitable. But it was fun for awhile!!!
