Authorities said they were preparing to deal with dozens of fatalities after a fire raced through a converted warehouse crowded with people attending a Friday night concert, officials said.
Nine bodies have been recovered, but Alameda County sheriffs Sgt. Ray Kelly said officials were prepared for up to 40 fatalities. He said many of those inside the warehouse were young, some from foreign countries.
Firefighters were beginning to move through the burned-out remains of the building looking for victims. The buildings roof caved in, and debris will make the search effort difficult, Kelly said.

This is so tragic.
Yes, and so avoidable.
Yes you do, it’s Kalifornia.
How did they rig electricity in there and who paid for the bills?
Is that the first floor and the rave was on the second floor? I can’t imagine there being enough room for people among all that clutter.
The Daily Mail had excellent coverage this AM including excellent photos of all those missing.
They look like a diverse group of young people that need education and protection rather than indoctrination and agitation. Many wore graphic signs of rebellion, not unusual for youth, but rebellion must be met with education for the purpose of self protection and protection of others to mitigate the danger of plain old rebellion.
Fire and occupancy codes are Trump’s fault.
Ask PG&E, they would know, they can burn down entire neighborhoods.
That is true. It is a tragedy, and it is obvious by the way the press conferences have been handled that they leaders of Oakland are afraid of the repercussions. They could not have jammed more government employees on camera if they tried. They will probably try to blame businessmen or landowners.
And a tool of Straight White Christian Male oppression, mistreatment, and impoverishment of minorities, gays, women and chillun.
Trannies hardest hit.
Observant, you are.
Oakland is such a Rat Urban Utopia.
Oland be dat, homie!
It might but what it shows me is the kids are not very bright at choosing a “safe place”.
I don’t care for any of this. It was a party of drunk kids and some asshole lit it up.
Same thing happened in R.I. years ago.
Be careful who you know kids. Being cool doesn’t mean dying in a fire.
Possibly 40 dead is quite a story—that so far hasn’t got nearly the coverage of the TN fires.
The pics are interesting. No sprinklers shown. Hopefully the “talent” was not using pyrotechnics.
Even had a creepy name.
The Daily Mail has many more and better, here: Daily Mail
This was pretty nasty; at the pressers they were asking about investigations going on at the building before the fire.
The TN fires are horrible. My daughter just came back from a class she took on the NC side a few weeks ago. She’s heard from he friends down there that it’s just horrible.
I don’t know why they both can’t be big stories.
