Authorities said they were preparing to deal with dozens of fatalities after a fire raced through a converted warehouse crowded with people attending a Friday night concert, officials said.
Nine bodies have been recovered, but Alameda County sheriffs Sgt. Ray Kelly said officials were prepared for up to 40 fatalities. He said many of those inside the warehouse were young, some from foreign countries.
Firefighters were beginning to move through the burned-out remains of the building looking for victims. The buildings roof caved in, and debris will make the search effort difficult, Kelly said.

On the plus side, they had protected class management, entertainers and attendees, to which the law does not apply.
My gut tells me this fire may get more coverage in the MSM than the fires in Tennessee, just due to this being a left wing area.
It already is, plus because the media is right there.
Most networks prior to this could not have found TN on a map.
Virtually all the victims likely to be Progs (Progrssives) but nonetheless a tragedy of the first order.
There is no doubt that every single employee of the City of Oakland is in maximum Cover-Your-A$$ mode and destroy all evidence of malfeasance in office proceeds at breakneck pace.
Who will be the scapegoat?
Here are inside pictures of this place
http://www.oaklandghostship.com/
the place was a tinder box waiting for a match
plus the stair case getting to the second floor was made out of wooden pallets and other junk
all of this was built illegal without permits
it’s Oakland. Is it a problem?
Just like that one in Rhode Island a while back.
A terrible fate.
unpermitted entertainment
Yep. Had this happened in East TN we would’t know about it for a couple of days.
Looks like a cool place to sight see. Not sure I would want to hang out with the typical party-goers though. I’d have a hard time finding my way out of that crazy place - nigh impossible being drunk, high and the place on fire.
40 people dead - tragic.
Fortunately for city inspectors, all of this construction work was done just this morning, by the oppressed progressive victims that unfortunately perished in the fire.
Honest.
Until 40 people die due to not bothering to do the things needed to get a permit.
Then we are reminded why building codes and fire regulations were written.
CA is regulated to death with building, fire, and environmental codes. Yet these alt-artists types managed to convert an abandoned warehouse into their own little utopia and no one on the city council or in Sacramento batted an eyelash.
If you have a ounce of brains, you will stay permanently out of Oakland, ...
by about 50 miles.
I do like that rug. I can't imagine how there was space to hold bands and a crowd of people though.
It does bring up some thoughts on meeting code, etc. One extreme is “Hey - it’s my property and I can do what I want!” (Hope you have a good lawyer and lots of insurance).
The other extreme is “Yes - you DO need wheelchair access, hand rails and potty stalls for the disabled at your dance club.”
Laws are for the little people.
Those involved here are special people.
Yeah. Although I was surprised at the young white crowd in most of the photos at the site. (Plus the atmosphere of the club.) Looks more “Bohemian” than “Gansta rap”.
That’s a bit unfair. Apples and oranges.
“Fire” may be the common denominator but the venue is not. Whereas TN is a wildfire of a more “natural” cause that gradually spread, this was a fire accident inside a single building with a “party” or something going on.
And we have heard about the wildfires in the south. As well as in the west the many times they happen out there.
