On the way back to the Olympic Village, we pulled into a convenience store to use the restroom. There was no restroom inside, so we foolishly relieved ourselves on the backside of the building behind some bushes. There was a locked door out back and I did not witness anyone breaking it open. I am unsure why, but while we were in that area, Ryan pulled to the ground a framed metal advertisement that was loosely anchored to the brick wall. I then suggested to everyone that we needed to leave the area and we returned to the taxi.

It’s hard to sift through these stories to know just what happened but this account is more believable than anything else I have heard. Gas station attendant sees the guys go to back and hears them destroy something back there and calls security who then extort money (as usual in these hellholes).
Sounds like a shakedown robbery to me.
There has never been a photo posted of the destroyed bathroom or bathroom door, has there? Why is extortion so hard to believe?
Its a cultural misunderstanding.
In Brasil you pay off you ever you need to in this situation.
Whether it is a policeman or security guard, they expect to get paid.

Yeah, those South American bathrooms are so clean and beautifully kept up. I am referring to the awful TMZ reporting of urine found on the floor of said bathroom and blaming the swimmers for said urine on the floor. After listening to that being reported on Fox I turned the channel.
I don’t know what happened but I do know that most of South America and Central America are off my list because I don’t like their attitude towards single female travelers.
Why is it so hard to believe these prats didn’t lie? Why the equivocation now from those involved from the Olympians?

Yes. Bathrooms aren’t nice there. I have also been a young man drunk in a foreign country in places much worse than there and we weren’t and aren’t as sheepishly innocent and self serving as this account tries to get across.
If you really want to blame anyone, blame the damn IOC for taking the bribes it took to get them to name RIO for this year’s summer Olympics. This isn’t sport, neither is it ‘amateur’ sport when the darlings of the media become millionaires and do nothing but feed their egos and their bank accounts.
If they destroyed a bathroom or a bathroom door, why haven’t pictures of their destruction been posted? Wasn’t it reported that the swimmers were charged over $11,000? Does that seem honest to you?
It sounds like they were extorted by the security guards (what can of gas station has 2 armed security guards?) and then extorted by the Brazilian police so they could leave the country. A lot people, including many posters here, jumped on the swimmers without knowing all sides of the story.
Precisely an everyday occurance.

Of course the locality was pissed and probably overly punished them. That in no way exonerates them as innocent of the charges and/or events. Even this guy’s account is self-serving and exculpatory. Can’t you see that?
