Trump VP search enters home stretch as pick likely next week
CNN ^ | July 5, 2016 | Eric Bradner and Jim Acosta

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump's much anticipated vice presidential pick is expected to be announced next week, a Trump adviser told CNN Tuesday...

Does Trump want to double the bombast by picking a brash straight-talker who mirrors his own style, like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich?

Does he prefer someone whose Washington experience and message discipline would counter his freelancing, like Indiana Gov. Mike Pence?

Or does he want to elevate a rising star, like Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst or Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton?

Pence and his wife Karen met with Trump at his New Jersey golf club on Saturday. The huddle came as a source told CNN some in Trump's inner circle are pushing for Pence...

if, as is sometimes said, the first rule of VP is “do no harm” then I think Pence suffices. He does no harm.

Newt does serious harm. In fact, I’d say it is impossible for Trump to win with Newt.

I hope it’s Pence. Or Ernst. Or Christie. Or someone else.

Joni Ernst is fine on the issues, but she is a neophyte senator, and what Trump needs is experience and influence in Washington to reassure the undecideds who like Trump but don’t think he would be effective. So, Sessions or Gingrich.

Must be someone on the side of the citizens and the rule of law.
No cheap labor importers.
Anyone who has previously supported amnesty and voted against border security and enforcement will undermine the main issue that will get Trump elected.

Sessions and Gingrich will continue to be senior advisors to Trump. But Joni Ernst is a much better choice for VP.

She beat a democrat by 9 points in a blue state. I was watching some of her campaign videos and it’s easy to see why. She is good. She’ll deliver the soccer moms to Trump.

Once he prunes the list down to the semifinalists, maybe he should do a live reality TV special in which he makes the final selection. It would be one of the most-watched programs in television history. What better way to publicize the qualities of the VP selection and explain the rationale for the choice.

Of the ones made public, I’d select Cotton with Ernst a far distant second. I don’t consider any of the others acceptable. Newt - the Contract With America Newt - could be good but his multiple personality disorder and tender ego make him a timebomb just waiting to go off.

She'll have to be ready to counterpunch hard because she will be set upon immediately by the jackals. She'll be labeled as stupid, as scary, as crazy, and as a non-woman for running on the ticket opposing Hillary. The View-watching soccer moms could be swayed very easily to reject her.

I cringe of the thought of Newt getting the nod. His wife has an unnatural ambition to be flotus. She would have thoughts of trump retiring soon.

She not only checks the woman’s box, but also the veteran’s box and the swing state box. Plus she has experience castrating hogs. There are a lot of those inside the DC beltway.

Flynn is too narrow. He can debate about the middle east, but anything else?

I disagree. He needs experienced people around him, but not necessarily in the VP position. What he needs most is a VP who can carry on after Trump's eight years, and that Gingrich can not do. We have to start thinking long-term, like the Dems have always done.

Yes, but she helps counter the ONLY thing that qualifies Madam Benghazi in some circles - she's a woman.

The FIRST issue isn’t WHO but WHAT.

WHAT is the single most important criteria for Trump’s VP? Someone who can take over the Presidency in eight years to continue the job of reinstating political freedom and the Constitution as the Rule of law in America.

Trump’s VP must be a person who in eights years, is ready, willing, and able to lead the effort to dismantle the unconstitutional 80% of the $4 trillion central government, leaving it the size of about $800 billion. Get rid of most of the unconstitutional cabinet bureaucracies. Nuke the utterly unconstitutional Administrative State from which all these unilateral, tyrannical, unconstitutional, and obnoxious executive laws (”regulations”) come from. Send hundreds of thousands of government workers, bureaucratic heads, and officials home packing. Sad day for them, but a great day for America and our Free Constitutional Republic.

Otherwise, this “Trump Movement” will be merely a speed bump on the Road to Serfdom as Hayek put it and as the Regan Revolution turned out to be because of the short-sighted choice of Bush as VP. Trump CANNOT make the same mistake.

WHO it is should be IMO, consistent with the anti-establishment push of this movement. Trump should pick an “unknown” - a talented, wise, and wealthy non-politician who loves America, probably a good businessman, who has a fire in his belly to do away with political correctness and tyranny and to put the central government into its constitutional cage. He’ll have eight years to figure out what he needs to know about the job. Also, a wealthy person, like Washington, Reagan, and Trump, would be less tempted to cash in on political expediency because he is already wealthy.

ugh...I’m sort of hoping someone can explain why we are totally wrong on this....all that said, I think surely Trump is smart enough not do go down the Newt road.

But we shall see....
