PPP's new Maryland poll finds both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton with double digit leads heading into next week's primary election.
Trump isn't looking as dominant as he is in New York, polling at 43%. But he's benefiting from a similar dynamic to the Empire State in that there is no clear alternative to him- John Kasich and Ted Cruz are closely matched for second place at 29% and 24% respectively. Trump is by far the most broadly popular candidate among GOP voters in the state with a 57/37 favorability rating compared to 48/35 for Kasich and 33/50 for Cruz. This is a state where even if the field was winnowed to two candidates Trump would still have an advantage- he leads Kasich by 12 points at 53/41 and Cruz by 20 points at 54/34 in head to head match ups.
Another thing that speaks to the indecision among anti-Trump voters is that only 53% of Kasich voters and 49% of Cruz voters say they're firmly committed to voting for their current candidate of choice, compared to 90% of Trump voters who say they're definitely with him. If New York's results tonight give any sort of clarity on the stronger candidate between Cruz and Kasich that could help one of them to gain some momentum in Maryland with so many of their voters willing to shift allegiances.

All those states must let voters vote and that is why Trump is winning.
Trump ran strong in the south and the swing states of VA, FL where as cruz has won just 3 states where people vote outside TX which was not even 50%.
DiD that ever occur to you?
well seeing as only 4 states went for him where the voters could vote for a candidate and he did miserable in the south and now the north east then I would think that it makes your point about conservatives like cruz a bit moot
You don’t understand the principle of Cubanadian ju-jitsu.
It’s how a candidate who can’t get 20% in swing states suddenly clobbers Hillary in November.
see that thought has not been thought about with the cruz voters.
Gets hardly any voters and then they say he can beat Clinton LOL
Actually, Rubio won the Minnesota caucus.
The Peoples Republic of Maryland. Now there’s a real bastion of conservatism.
Good grief why anyone would want to live there. Talk about a progressive stew-pot.
This is interesting that a guy who doesn’t have any chance to win anything is beating Ted Cruz.
No different then the south.
Funny you said that about New York. You cruzies can’t keep your liberal states straight. Some of you were saying Alabama and Mississippi were liberal because trump won them. Too funny.
I lived there 3 years. Although expensive, it is a state where roads are good. The state is clean and is rather beautiful. Oh and Arnold Maryland where I lived was republican. So is the eastern shore. Oh and we have a republican governor working to clean up the state more.
This is a state where even if the field was winnowed to two candidates Trump would still have an advantage- he leads Kasich by 12 points at 53/41 and Cruz by 20 points at 54/34 in head to head match ups.
LOLBOOM!
The Colorado Disaster effect at work.
If Trump has a big night tonight (and I believe he probably will), and then follows that with a strong showing next week...I believe he will most definitely get to the 1237 before the convention and put all of this drama to rest.
I am a Cruz supporter...but these are just the facts.
My hope is that Cruz, once his mathematical path is closed and sealed, and if Trump really does well next week...that Cruz in May will put down the war hatchet and come out in support of Trump and help build the winning team we simply have to have for November.
Cruz can do that (in terms of burying the hatchet and uniting the party)...and I hope and pray he will.
Rubio won Minnesota -- the home of the only state not to vote for Reagan in the landslide of 1984.
~~Go Trump, GO!!~~ And, screw you cruz.
I’ll be so glad when Tanking Man is gone.
How do you explain Trump’s dominance in the Deep South then? Are they liberal too?
Thank you for the very level-headed post. And I would feel the same way if the situation was reversed.
Trump again with a big lead and Kasich again is second. If this poll is accurate, Trump will gain momentum and Kasich will claim that he has the momentum among the Never Trump people.
