Trump: To make college affordable, 'we have to start some governmental program'

During a town hall Thursday evening in Iowa, Donald Trump told voters the "only way" to make college more affordable for low-income students is "to start some governmental program."

The Republican presidential hopeful was asked what measures he would take, as president, to ensure middle-to-low income Americans are able to "pay their tuition [and] afford books while they're going to school."

"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.

"They go, and they work, and they take loans, and they're borrowed up, and they can't breathe, and they get through college and the worst thing is, they go through that whole process and they don't have any job," the billionaire said, referring to the majority of undergraduates enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.

He continued, "You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with."

"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out."

Pressed on what he would do to solve the burgeoning student debt crisis, Trump said, "we're going to do refinancing for people who have loans who literally can't do anything."

"We're going to do refinancing and extensions," he said. Both of Trump's leading Democratic opponents, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, have proposed refinancing existing student loans.

Last June, Senate Republicans blocked a vote on legislation sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., that would have...

The only “government program” needed is to make student-loan debt dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Do that, and no lender will make student loans to anyone not likely to have a real job on graduation and the inclination to actually pay the loan back.

While I’m certainly opposed to price controls and salary caps in the private sector, perhaps they would be useful in state run, taxpayer funded academia. Cut some of the ridiculous faculty, staff and administrator salaries and adjust tuition downwards. Replace a lot of the university support staff with work study programs and have the students pay for part of their tuition with labor towards running the places.

One of my professors at our community college told me....”You wouldn’t believe what they pay me”....and he didn’t mean too little.

Hard to believe. I know for a fact that CC professors don’t make a lot of $$. I know of one professor at my university that didn’t get tenure. His next job was at a community college where the starting salary was half what a junior, assistant professor made...which would put it at about $30K. I also know one senior level CC professor getting ready to retire. After 30 years, he still makes under $70K; a full professor at a regular university would make closer to $120. And the CC professors have big teaching loads.

Just what we need - another government program

Playing to the audience. If that is what it takes to win, OK but this is about the first thing he has said I disagree with.

And Donald Trump wants to create a database for anyone who isn't one of his supporters. Just like Hitler. I heard this last night on NBC Evening News.

Do I really have to put in a sarcasm tag?

We don’t need programs. We need to tell the youth of our nation, we will not bankroll loans for them. My daughter is a junior in college, when she applied to colleges we told her we would not co-sign any loans and encouraged her not to go into debt and that if she chose wisely we would pay for her college. She stayed home, in pursing a degree in science and we are paying about 11k a year in tuition. You can get through college without loans. You do have to sacrifice and work hard, but our family is proof that it can be done.

Only if the program involves removing government money from the system entirely, except for ROTC type programs.

Pathetic.

The first really, truly pathetic answer I’ve seen Trump give. The Manhattanite in him coming through.

Amen, bro! What we need is a government program to shut down government programs.

I’m down with your program.

Can’t afford school and not willing to pay for it? Then use modern technology to get your education cost effectively.

Pretty simple.

I agree we need a government program. Start axing colleges which create liberal Demonrats and start using the internet to replace liberal college professors.

...

Yep. There’s a glut of colleges (subsidies will do that), and a glut of students who don’t belong in college (subsidies do that, too).

ALL lenders HAVE to either refinance, extend OR write-off bad loans... or imprison

Imprison works for me...

I do not like the sound of that. But keep in mind that the online college is likely to grow very quickly. And artificial intelligence and computer generated characters, a brilliant non partisan professor can be created in many disciplines.

Making sure the government was getting out of the way, and allowing employment to grow sufficiently so the recent college graduates would HAVE the means to repay these pesky student loan (with which they bought vastly overpriced college degrees) sounds much more like the kind of program that would be supported by The Donald.

That and renegotiating the repayment terms these recent and some not so recent graduates find so onerous.

One more example of the liberal commentators putting words in The Donald’s mouth that he never uttered.

The liberal commentators in 1980 did that with Reagan, too, but he went over their heads and spoke directly to the people.

The Donald puts on a pep rally, and like it or not, the networks are sort of forced to carry it, even while The Donald is talking over them.
