WASHINGTON House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy abruptly withdrew his promising bid to become speaker Thursday as the married congressman was accused of having an affair with another married House member in an anonymous posting on Wikipedia.
Minutes before Republicans were to cast votes to make him speaker-elect, McCarthy stood and told his colleagues that a fresh face was needed to unite the party.

Nothing like a little blackmail to force people to tow the company line, et tu Newt?
Kind of reminds me of Bill Cinton. Everytime Bill was caught in a sexual peccadillo, some Republican had to resign in disgrace.
He was accused publicly back in January.

Actually, he was accused of conducting an affair with a House member BEFORE withdrawing his bid for speaker. In fact, that is probably the main reason he backed out.
Which is odd as this has been an 'open secret' since 2011-2012. FR had one or two threads on this very subject last month and the internet sets forth numerous statements/articles in the last few years.
Jim needs to add a like button, because brother, this comment is an absolute right on statement.
I just don’t see any way around it sometime in the next 10-20 years at this point.
Well, Frank Roche's job just got a lot easier.
The story was out, well BEFORE the Wiki entry.
a liberal would refuse to step down, refuse to apologize, refuse to do anything but wear the affair as a badge of victory- and would still be popular with their constituents because apparently their constituents have no morals
If the rumor of an affair is true, making McCarthy speaker would have been a nightmare, as the Speaker would have been subject to blackmail.
I call on all Senators and Congressmen to publicly announce their affairs, sexual perversions, acceptances of bribery, and involvement in all other scandals, so as to not be subject to blackmail. Or resign immediately.
Sure sounds like they have too much free time on their hands.
Do you think they really work very hard?
Sounds more like a paid vacation to me.
Since this worked, we can expect more of this during the campaign. Dems play dirty, have no principles, and have no shame.
Yet Wikipedia claims it’s unsourced.
Not sure we can blame the Dems for this one. In addition to the affair being an “open secret” on Capitol Hill for several years, McCarthy would have been a relatively weak Speaker whom the Dems could have “played” like they did Boehner.

Did Someone At DHS Edit The Wikipedia Pages Of Kevin McCarthy And Renee Ellmers?

He was just doing to another member of congress what congress has been doing to American citizens for a long time now!!!!
no, it is likely the result of Republican remembrances of other speakers that were outed and then had to resign. Were I a Republican congressman either GOPe or GOPc with knowledge of the affair, I would have urged the man to cease the quest for the job.
Such an urging would be mere common sense.
Long before. I read it early this year.
Which is why I doubt this story came from the White Hut.
