How Steve Jobs Fleeced Carly Fiorina
Backchannel ^ | October 1, 2015 | Steven Levy

...

Steve Jobs and Carly Fiorina made a deal where HP could slap its name on Apple’s wildly successful product. Nonetheless, HP still managed to botch things.

...

If it were a straight deal for HP to include Apple’s software, the fee might have been hundreds of millions of dollars. (Around that time, software companies were paying huge sums to have their products or services preinstalled, since people seldom deleted them and often used the default choices.) Even better, preinstalling iTunes was a way for Apple to stifle Microsoft’s competitor to the iTunes Music Store. As an Apple leader at the time puts it, “This was a highly strategic move to block HP/Compaq from installing Windows Media Store on their PCs. We wanted iTunes Music store to be a definitive winner. Steve only did this deal because of that.”

One might even argue that since Carly Fiorina wasn’t making much profit from selling computers, each machine her company sold under this deal delivered more value to Apple than it did to HP.

In return, HP got the right to sell iPods. But not in a way that could possibly succeed. Fiorna boasted to me that she would be able to sell the devices in thousands of retail outlets; up to that point Apple mostly sold them online and in its own stores. But by the time in mid-2004 that HP actually began selling its branded iPods, Apple was expanding to multiple retail outlets on its own. And soon after HP began selling iPods, Apple came out with new, improved iPods;leaving HP to sell an obsolete device. Fiorina apparently did not secure the right to sell the most current iPods in a timely fashion, and was able to deliver newer models only months after the Apple versions were widely available.

Sorry for the choppy excerpt. Such is life in 300 words or less. Interesting read. He even punked her on what color she could have.

If you read the article at the site, one of the commenters responded, “No wonder he told her sorry.”

Yea, if she had stayed he might have made even more $ from her naivety.

An article claiming that Apple's Steve Jobs got the best of Carly Fiorina in the HP iPod deal in the early 2000s. . . what do you think? Did Jobs cut a good deal or a bad deal for HP and Apple? — PING!

Payglored ping for the Windows ping list. . .

Actually she is the winner because ol Steve Jobs is  dead and gone. She's still standing.

Check this out. My daughter found an iPhone today in the street. She said it had an "outer" and showed me hers. I said that it shouldn't stop damage.

She was wondering about the GPS and pretty soon it rang, was the owner, so she returned it. Actually she agreed to leave it at the desk where she was at her appointment and the student would pick it up.

She didn't think it was damaged but said it looked like several cars had run over it from the scuff marks on the outer box. It was one of our busiest streets by a college. Those cases must be super tough.

Too bad she didn't snap a picture of it lying in the street with her iPhone 4.

This article claimed that Carly Fiorina's HP had been somehow duped by Steve Jobs into not selling the "latest" iPod while Apple was selling different, newer iPod models. Simply NOT true. Initially, HP only offered the 20 and 40 GB 4th-generation iPods. HP later added the iPod mini, the iPod photo, and the iPod shuffle to the lineup.[4] Thanks to HP's distribution network, the iPod+HP was sold in retailers where Apple did not have any presence at the time, which included Wal-Mart, RadioShack, and Office Depot. In other words, HP sold every iPod that Apple sold during that period.

iPod model 4

This author's so-called expertise counts for nothing if he doesn't know these facts and is using it only to bash Fiorina.

That would be an "Otter box", Aliska. . . and they are super tough. They make them for Samsung Galaxy Android phones too. Not too sure about other Android phones, though.

She showed me hers so I guess I read it wrong. Otter box. If I were to get a phone, I wouldn’t get anything but the iconic Apple, the one in the stores that look like temples and you worship in them lol.

Would Donald Trump have made this deal if he ran HP at the time?

I won’t use an Otter Box. . . I find them bulky and they make the iPhone difficult to use the touch screen properly. They block the edges where some of the functionality is such as pull out control panels and drop down notifications.

I do put my phone is a protective sleeve . . . mine is a fine leather form fitted one. Easy to reach all the functions and still protects the iPhone 6 and will fit the iPhone 6S.

I think he would have. . . and he would have sold more, advertising the HP iPods better than Carly did. HP sold 5% of the 50 million of so iPods sold during the time they were selling iPods. . . call it 2.5 million units. . . that's nothing to sneeze at.

By the way, I still own one of these 40MB "HP" versions of the iPod. I think I got it at CompUSA which is also long gone from the scene.

Still works too.

I didn't click on that thread but did see the photo of the outside of the store in Paris.

I'll consider what you said if/when I get an iPhone. 7 is a nice prime number, maybe when that one comes out.

I doubt I'd use the phone that much except the web, but the texting keyboard would be hard to get used to but then so was my Apple keyboard and I'm fine with it now, keep it pushed back though because of spills.

Chris Harper Mercer. Name of the shooter just confirmed, Fox radio.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.
