Last years most popular baby names were Benjamin and Emma, but this year the top boy and girl names could actually be the same.
2015 is looking like the year of the gender-neutral baby names, according to a midyear report by BabyCenter.com.
Currently, names like Amari, Karter, Phoenix, Quinn and Reese have been making the largest leaps in popularity.
As usual, baby names are reflecting a larger cultural shift, says BabyCenters Global Editor in Chief Linda Murray. Millennials are an open-minded and accepting group, and they dont want their children to feel pressured to conform to stereotypes that might be restrictive. Just as companies have started making more neutral kids clothes, and taking boy and girl labels off toys, an increasing number of parents are choosing unisex names.
This probably isnt a big surprise. Earlier this year, Oxford English Dictionary was considering adding the gender-neutral pronoun Mx. Boston City Hall recently built a gender-neutral bathroom. And all the Caitlyn Jenner news has opened up a discussion about gender identity.
This trend is trickling down to kids as well. Not only in baby names, but in childrens toys and clothes, too.

For some reason my neighborhood as a kid was thick with them. Teddy, Kim, Dana, Terry to name a few.
Stanley.
There, much more accurate.
Very convenient.
Sly Stallone named his kid Sage Moonblood. Other stupid celebrity baby names - Kyd, Apple, Pilot Inspektor, Crimefighter, Audio Science, Jermajisty, Ya’Majesty, Pirate, Speck Wildhorse, Buddy Bear, Blue, Bear Blu, Poet, Peyote, Rocket, Banjo, Bandit, Camera, Racer, Hero, Sailor, Puma, Bamboo, Bow-Ty, and Hud.
I knew a kid named Bronco Billy and that was on his birth certificate. Then there was a guy named Service. And another guy was named Serious Curious because his mama was curious who his daddy was and had serious birthing pains. Is it any wonder the last guy was in prison.
Mmmm my mom’s name was Tommie. She was the last born of nothing but girls and was named for her father.
My moms name was straight up Tommie on her birth certificate. Not short for anything. She was named after her dad.
Had she lived she would be 79.
Personally, I LOVE the name!
“Millennials are an open-minded “
Nope. Just gutless cowards with no standards.
I suppose every expecting family in the country had the exact same idea at the same moment, because he had tons of classmates with the name. It was the "most popular" name for boys that year.
My true first name is not the name I've been known by my entire life. I'm a second name guy. That's what I wouldn't saddle a kid with.
I've never known how to say that, but I think it has a "v" sound in it.
For real.
Cordially,
No, it’s worse plus it has two accent marks. Yeah, the name you mention is pronounced “Schavawn.” I love the name “Sorcha” but don’t know how it’s pronounced. The name “Aine” is pronounced “Onya” which sounds beautiful but looks awful.
Christopher, Alexander, Steven and Leah.
Most names from the Bible are nice and Matthew is particularly nice. Sorry it was popular that year! I grew up in the era of Debbie and Cathy and Patty. How I wanted a name like that.
And these same folks are the ones who complain when you ask what the child’s gender is. People with common sense cannot win in this topsy turvy world.
It’s more likely more people waiting to find out their child’s gender upon birth (not through ultrasound) and have picked a neutral name ahead of time.
