Last years most popular baby names were Benjamin and Emma, but this year the top boy and girl names could actually be the same.
2015 is looking like the year of the gender-neutral baby names, according to a midyear report by BabyCenter.com.
Currently, names like Amari, Karter, Phoenix, Quinn and Reese have been making the largest leaps in popularity.
As usual, baby names are reflecting a larger cultural shift, says BabyCenters Global Editor in Chief Linda Murray. Millennials are an open-minded and accepting group, and they dont want their children to feel pressured to conform to stereotypes that might be restrictive. Just as companies have started making more neutral kids clothes, and taking boy and girl labels off toys, an increasing number of parents are choosing unisex names.
This probably isnt a big surprise. Earlier this year, Oxford English Dictionary was considering adding the gender-neutral pronoun Mx. Boston City Hall recently built a gender-neutral bathroom. And all the Caitlyn Jenner news has opened up a discussion about gender identity.
This trend is trickling down to kids as well. Not only in baby names, but in childrens toys and clothes, too.

this so that the child can decide what gender they are later in life
How convenient. They can identify with anything without going through a name change. Maybe a baby named “It” would fit any possible of the past, present and future genders?
A friend at a local school district noted a boy’s name.
It was Cervis Lane.
Personally, I like gender-specific Biblical names.
And everyone is just falling into line with the latest MSM meme. Right.
I don't buy anything the MSM says, especially these stories about metadata where you can't see their methodology or primary source information.
That includes polls.
IMHO, gender neutral names have existed for a long time. I’ve known males and females with the names Robin, Terry, Lynn, Lee... and gender neutral nicknames like Mickey (for Mike or Michaelena), Jamie (short for James or used as Jamie for girls), Nicky (for Nicolas or Nicole). I guess the difference NOW is the reasoning behind choosing them.. before it was usually a name given for a relative and now it is gender neutral “don’t want to label my baby as a boy or girl till they decide insanity.
What motivates mothers to name a daughter Ryan or Sidney instead of a female name, in the first place? I think mothers are seeking to make a politicsl statement when they give their girls mannish sounding names.
What a load of hogwash. People don't go about naming their child on the basis of something like this.
This woman is a fool.
We gave a few of our kids names that could, perhaps, be used by the other sex. But our girls are raised to be girls and our boys to be boys. I don’t think parents are purposely giving their kids gender neutral names, the author is assigning motivation to parents in order to push an agenda.
Umm... What about Taylor?
Shoot, My Sister knew a guy one time who's mom's name was Tommie.
I agree. Where’s the evidence that this is the motivation?
Nebuchadnezzar ;)
Chewbacca?
My family knew a female named Tommie... shortened from Thomasina. She was named after her Dad and Grandfather.
Our daughter’s name was picked because I, for some odd reason, wanted an Irish name for her and we have a pattern in naming our kids. The boys get a name that ends with one sound, the girls with another. Those things narrowed our options.
On the site that I found the name, it is spelled one way for a boy and another way for a girl, but they sound the same. We weren’t trying to give her a boy’s name-my father in law had a fit, though, and told us she would grow up with gender confusion.
So far, she is our girliest girl. She loves the colors pink and purple, pretty bows in her hair and sparkly shoes. I’m not too worried and her name is cute with a great meaning: red headed warrior queen.
Oh please. Parents have been using neutral names forever. Many Stacy’s, Kim’s around of both sexes.
LOL!! I was thinking more Daniel, Luke, Adam, Rachel, Sarah, etc.
