"Freedom's Frigate" is the nickname of a sailing ship now on its way to America. It's a replica of the French vessel that helped our country win the war of independence. Before its departure, Mark Phillips went aboard:
As memorials to American wars go, this one goes right back to the first one -- the Revolutionary War. And it is certainly among the most handsome and most intricate history lessons ever built.
A newly-launched replica of the French frigate, Hermione, is now in mid-Atlantic, ploughing her way westward toward the U.S. East Coast. She's retracing the voyage of the original Hermione, whose mission was so crucial in the American War of Independence that she may be one of the most important warships in U.S. naval history, and the most forgotten.
The original was built for speed, and so, according to her crew, is the copy.
"Lafayette said she sails like a bird, and that's true," said Marc Jensen.
Lafayette is the point of this story. The French aristocrat and great friend of George Washington's, the Marquis de Lafayette, was returning to the revolutionary battle aboard Hermione on that 1780 voyage, and he was bringing good news -- that French troops and more fighting ships were also coming to America to support the cause.

absolutely gorgeous. Wish she would have gone further south, being super motivational for the Navy and Marine bases to get a look at her.
I hope the Midshipmen from Annapolis will get a chance to view her. Perhaps to tour her.
This report reminded me of the days when CBS had people like Charles Kuralt. When the network was worth watching.

Yeah people forget that. They cared nothing for our independence. They got paid by us just to poke king George in the eye and block some vital red coat ports and teach us how to march. We did the fighting and dying.
I am fairly certain that Lafayette was French,
cared a great deal about liberty and donated quite a bit of his personal fortune toward our cause.

Soo, I had this friend/co-worker from England.
He was here for work and was able to take some time to explore. Driving up and down the east coast for three days before we went to the July 4th celebration in D.C.
While celebrating the 4th, I asked him what he thought about his trip and what he saw?
He said, "you Americans have no originality, Virtually every place has named after places in England"
I shot back in an instant, "We weren't Americans then".
It is told the Statue of Lafayette across from the White House has been crying since the current occupant of the White House came to live there...just saying
