Ruger also sells a ton of handguns and centerfire rifles.
I picked up a ruger 77/44 bolt action earlier this year. An accurate bolt action rifle that shoots 44 mag handgun cartridges could come in handy. They make them in 357 mag too.
If you know an FFL who won’t charge an arm and a leg for the transfer, Palmetto State Armory has the black synth stock model for $180+$17 shipped right now. If you are patient they usually run a free shipping deal every couple of weeks.
Tempting, but I will stick with my Remington Nylon 66.

their lcp pistol, i think, is a great design all around for a small ccw gun. supposedly really good on recoil the way the grip is designed.
Perhaps thats another issue. Ruger is a bit behind the curve. Small BUG type 380s have been made by any number of makers for some time. I know they came out very late w/ their version of the AR too. Their traditional autoloader was heavy, large and somewhat expensive. I dont know how reliable it was. At the time though Glock was eating everyones lunch and dinner.

I’m not sure Walmart still sells them...but they had a Walmart Special with a wood stock, longer (21-22”) stainless barrel. I think it was $189 back then. Bought one and the manager walked me to the front door while he carried my new Ruger! I spruced it up with some Volquartsen innards and Tech Sights.
Probably 5-6 years ago. It’s a fun gun.

Have a Remington Nylon 66. Shoots better than my much newer Ruger 10/22, even though the Rem 66 is beat to hell and has fired thousands of rounds.

You don’t want a “sttripped lower,” they are considered to be a firearm and have to be purchased through and FFL, so the AR you put together has to be registered. If you buy an 80% lower, it’s considered a non-firearm (under the Federal Firearms Act of 1968) and you can get it at places like this:

Home-built AR’s are legal under the same Act, and they do not have to be serialized or registered.
You can get a “fixture” that guides an end mill to cut the FCG and to drill for the necessary pins (there are only two). A milling machine is helpful, but you can also do the work on a good drill press.

It shoots good too. 1 1/2” groups at 100 yds with 240 gr semi-jacketed soft points.
Packs quite a punch too, the 18 1/2” barrel boosts the muzzle velocity to around 1,875 fps.
All stainless steel with synthetic stock weighs in at just under 6 lbs!

Now when I go into a gun store and look at the prices they are asking I just walk away. American Rifleman, whose sole purpose seems to be a shill for over-priced munitions had a feature article about a new Springfield Arms 1911 MSR was about $1,000. Are you kidding me? Obviously people will pay that, but I just laugh at those people.
I am glad I bought mine when they were affordable. As far as ammo, I have tens of thousands of rounds stashed away.
There are a lot of people like me. The industry just isn't going to sell us any more because we have a lifetime supply. The major customers left are the suckers and the people who will never have enough.
