Testing by AAA has found that how far an electric vehicle can travel on one charge varies widely depending on the weather. Frigid temperatures can reduce that distance by 57%.
The research is important to the Automobile Club of Southern California because it maintains mobile recharging trucks for people who misjudge how far they can go in their electric car.

LOL
Everyone knows this.
(Excepting, of course, the proudly ignorant who actually buy these vehicles.)
.
Who could have predicted this?
Me....and anybody who has ever used electronics in cold weather.
Hopium accelerates the reactions.
Look it up.
Just turn on the heater. That’’ll warm it up!..................
If Watermelon whackjobs weren't so against nuclear power, we could have SCADS of thorium LFTR nuclear plants, churnin' out 'lectricity (as Sarah might say), makin' petroleum product with the coal byproducts, and generally toolin' along on our merry way as a country.
But NO - we have President MomJeans, the economic illiterate, his equally dense MuppetMistress Valerie Jarrett, and the nincompoops Steven Chu & Ernest Moniz running the US NonEnergy Department.
Eat your non-energetic peas, peasants - and get out and push when it's 12 degrees out...
Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators
The Amish have the heater problem solved. They use a gasoline heater which they take out of the buggy during the spring cleaning.
I believe the way it works is that the batteries are kept at a warm temperature...in a compartment heated with electrical resistant heat from the batteries.
So, its not that the batteries are cold, as much as its a problem with the batteries draining in an attempt to keep themselves warm.
I tried to do similar research...and got some propaganda from Tesla that their real world driving data (yes driving a Tesla is like accepting cookies in your web browser) showed almost no difference in cold weather conditions. I think this is impossible and a lie...or maybe people in California don’t understand what cold conditions means.
They have shade trees at alpha centaur?
How does AAA figure into the future of EV’s?
It’s not like they can give it a jump start or anything.
All they are gonna be good for is changing tires or towing.
I have a Ford CMax Energi. Cold weather knocks about 5 miles off the range, supposedly due to the climate control. When it is really cold, I use the hybrid setting to run the engine. Once the car is warm, I switch over to PHEV first mode. I get my 5 miles range back. HOWEVER I would not have paid extra for the PHEV Energi if I did not get back the 4000 bucks rebate from the tax payers. Most of my local trips do not use gasoline at all, of course, I am retired.
Not only that, running them down in cold weather wears them out a lot faster.
It’s almost like batteries don’t like the cold or something. Weird.
Obama would have them arrested.
Outrageous that chemical reactions are dependent on temperature!
Volt no va!
This needed to be tested? Cold battery discharge rates are very well known.
This wins the latest NSS (No S*** Sherlock) award.
Sad isnt...so much economic potential. .wasted. sigh....
