Agreed. I also thought it was a stupid hand wringing type article.
Low ball bid by the Spaniards probably laced with lots of kickbacks.
Note to all involved. Not our problem, deal with it. The best way to “assist” in getting the dispute resolved is to permit a pipeline to Baja and build the LNG trains there. It would never have to be done. Panama would sort things out.
If the LNG boys think Panama is a better way let them pony up the $1.6 bil.
Jimmah Carter?
If they want to sell the canal back to us, OK.
Otherwise, no deal.
The is a likelyhood Texas will use the expanded Panama Canal to export crude oil, ... to California.
Texas crude vies with Saudi Arabia for California shipments

exas is poised to join Saudi Arabia as a supplier of oil to California as the mounting glut of crude on the U.S. Gulf Coast makes the trade profitable.
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP, the pipeline operator thats buying U.S. oil tankers, said its in talks to ship Texas crude to California through the Panama Canal. The 4,500-mile voyage would cost about $10 a barrel, broker Poten & Partners Inc. estimates, making Texas crude competitive with imports traveling 11,400 miles from Saudi Arabia, the West Coasts largest supplier, data compiled by Bloomberg show.
I still can’t believe the west just handed over control of that to China, I mean how idiotic was that?
You’ve probably never heard of “Cape Good Hope” either, right?
;-)
Blow it up and see who is the first nation to run over to get it started again. IOW follow the money!!!
China would go to war over that if they figured out who did it, but Ya, China is making good cash off of owning that.
Its also true that we had military bases stationed there but such bases were only good for local deployment of forces if necessary. I'm talking about Clayton, Amador, and Howard AFB on the Pacific side and Gulick on the Atlantic...........
With fleets in both the Atlantic and Pacific and the size and speed of todays ships, the canal would never be needed in terms of naval travel.
Since I was stationed there 40+ years ago, Panama City and the country itself has become a hub of international trade and a destination for American Ex-pats........
So if the Chinese control this canal then why are they talking about building another?
No it didn't and no GOP Senators lost their jobs.....And in retrospect, given the billions of dollars in renovation of the canal that is being paid by the Chinese, they saved the U.S. lots of bucks........
Blame Jimmy F’in Carter for giving it away. I was a semi-liberal back then and didn’t like it. We built and paid for it...why are we giving it away?
The existing canal is incapable of handling today's supertankers.........
You can't just shut down the existing canal to expand it like you shut down lanes on your freeways.
Because it was obsolete..as were the small military bases we had there.
I would not be surprised, either, if the Panama Canal region leads to a war
I remember the big fear in surrendering the canal was Communist Cuba taking it over. That fear was mostly correct....a Communist nation starting with a C basically owns it now
Fortunately the GOP base was quite conservative then, and real conservative....and a lot of GOP senators lost in 78 and 80 voting for it. There was not the Free Trade Communist Globalist liberal mindset with the GOP back then
“Remember the Panama Canal?”
Of course I do, I was raised there. My father worked at Dredging Division, Gamboa, Canal Zone from 1966 until he retired in the mid ‘80s.
I remember what a tumultuous time it was for us living there at the time the Carter administration was pushing the treaty.
What many may not know is that the impetus for turning it over began with some riots in the 1960s. Panamanian activists came into the CZ took down the USA flag and raised the Panamanian flag.
A sovereignty issue to be sure...even though the “Big Stick” was used to gain Panamanian independence from Colombia.
Lots of ex-Zonians have moved back to Panama...it’s the only home many of us have ever had. I hope to move back one day myself. I have no roots here in the states.
You are wrong. A number of GOP Senators lost re election after voting to surrender the canal
Instead of just chirping what some Liberal Globalist spits out on NewsMax or Salem Radio...why don’t you read up on history. Find out what Real Conservatism is
Who were they?
Son, I don't need you to tell me what Real Conservatism is.......
So stay on topic, ok? This thread is about the Panama Canal..
