A former U.S. official told The Journal that some of the technology allows the FBI to remotely activate the microphones in phones running on Google Inc.'s Android software to record conversations.

IMO, it is NO ACCIDENT that they do not put a PHYSICAL SHUTTER on these camera lenses, and a PHYSICAL SWITCH on the microphone. The videoconferencing cameras of the 80’s and 90’s came with these incredibly inexpensive bits of metal and plastic. AFAIK, no software, malware, goobermentware or whatever, can bridge an air gap or penetrate an opaque barrier.

Well, they sure as hell cannot call this routine ‘metadata’ they have hoodwinked the FISA court rubber stamp okay with.

Recording the actual phone call or not even a call to anyone is plain old eavesdropping monitoring. They had damned well better have a named warrant for that.

I gave my book away. Thanks for the link sten.

An early telephone intercept program during the Cold War.

An excerpt from SpyCatcher.

"Taylor's laboratory was also busy working on a new modification to SF (Special Facilities), called CABMAN. It was designed to activate a telephone without even entering the premises by radiating the telephone with a powerful radio beam. It worked, but only over short distances.

They were also in the early stages of developing a device called a MOP. A MOP made a cable do two jobs at once - transmit captured sound and receive power. It was in its early stages, but it promised to revolutionize MI6 activity by removing the extra leads which were always likely to betray a covert microphoning operation. I spent a lot of time in my first years in MI5 ensuring the correct specifications for MOP, and it was eventually successfully manufactured at the MI6 factory at Boreham Wood. ..."

That’s one good thing about using bitlocker or truecrypt. Even with a bootloader in the NIC they won’t be able to get into the OS without getting past that password prompt.

agreed. no obvious way around that, assuming no collusion between fedzilla and the developers

Anyone know how to disable the microphone on an Android tablet to disable this?

your clintonian parser must be fried from overuse lately.

without a warrant, any such activity would not be admissible to court...

that doesn't mean they aren't doing it with no intention of submitting it to the courts. this would be 'legal' as it wouldn't be used against you... therefore, no warrant needed.

Shoot, they could do that years ago. I even included it in my first novel, written around 2002.

any software setting could not be trusted.

you would have to gum up the mic itself.

get a recording app and record yourself... then gum it up... and see if you can still hear yourself or make out the words

“Not if it's turned off”

They can turn on any smart phone remotely, and the camera too. If you have On-Star or a similar program in your car they can do the same thing with that. With the older phones you can take out the batteries, but newer devices don't even let you do that. Your tablet and PC can also be turned on to listen if you have a microphone/camera. And, of course we have all recently learned how newer model cars can be manipulated remotely.

In facilities that handle classified material people aren't allowed to bring in phones, period, and they will use dogs to smell for the cell phone batteries to make sure that rule is enforced.

And for those of us who don't care because we never do anything wrong, remember they can always use the old trick of mixing and matching your words to have you saying things you never intended, like the way they used to fake photographs. Also, what is “wrong” for one period of time under one form of government can radically change over time. As we see now, even advocating for fair elections and
cleaned-up voter roles can get you targeted adversely by the FBI and IRS.

Meaning....that by the time you’ve realized that the info gleened from eavesdropping on conservative Americans will indeed by used against us, it will already be too late and we’ll already be well on our way to those FEMA camps via boxcars.

And you wonder why some of the establishment RINOs cave so easily. Can you imagine the dirt Obama has on them? Anyone could be blackmailed at anytime with this kind of ability.

I think the NSA has stuff on Obama...

"And if they don’t have anything on you, they can MANUFACTURE IT (emphasis added)."

BINGO! We have a winnah, give that man a Cupie Doll.

This is in fact the crux of the matter. Patriotic Americans, Tea Party members and associates have been labeled domestic terrorists by Molech Obamessiah and his entire administration. We are evil "bad guys" (and girls) in their eyes for wanting to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law and wanting to save the Republic and the American way of life.

The problem for Obama and his entire administration is that the overwhelming majority of Tea Party people and Freepers are law abiding citizens.

Well, now that Obama's NSA, FBI, "Homeland Security", the IRS and the Lord God alone knows how many other agencies are actively spying on EVERY AMERICAN and have UNLIMITED ACCESS WITHOUT A WARRANT to our e-mails, phone conversations, physical mail (it was announced by the U.S. Postal service this week that they are taking a photographic image of EVERY piece of mail sent and STORING IT) all of our digital and internet information and video feeds off of our computers, laptops, security surveillance systems, "smart" TV's and numerous other appliances and electronic devices on top of demanding all of our internet passwords and log on information ALL BEING STORED "just in case" they need to access it in order to investigate a "crime" you may have committed or intend to commit, it is less than nothing for Molech Obamessiah and his ilk to MANUFACTURE ANY EVIDENCE THEY NEED TO CONVICT ANY ONE OF US OF NEARLY ANYTHING!

Bank fraud: no problem, they just access your online banking information with or without you being online at the time and with the help of their wily, deft computer programmers they do their hocus pocus and before you know it, you have stolen $250,000 and transferred it to an off shore account that you set up from your own computer. Of course they did it but when they take the "evidence" to the Grand Jury they will say: "we received a valid warrant to search Mr. Joe, or Jill Teaparty's home and to confiscate their laptop or desktop computer... (fill in the blank)and upon thorough examination of their hard drive our skilled agents of the law were able to break through their firewalls and encryption and decipher evidence of their dastardly crime and here is the evidence to prove it which you can clearly see for yourself."

Or another scenario which they could use to put any one of us in jail for a very long time: Child pornography.

"Members of the Grand Jury, we received an "anonomyous tip" that they were involved with child pornography. Based upon that tip we obtained a legal search warrant and confiscated Mr. Joe, or Jill Freeper's laptop or desktop computer and upon thorough examination of their hard drive our skilled agents of the law were able to break through their firewalls and encryption and low and behold, we found hundreds (thousands, what ever number they need to plant in order to make sure you are found guilty and put in jail for a VERY LONG TIME)of photos of child porn which they had downloaded." "See, here are some of the awful photos and we even have the log-in information and the times they were online and accessed these web sites within the NSA saved data information we have on them within our vast storage data banks!" "We demand they be 'brought to justice' for their 'undeniable and unspeakable crimes'." In light of the overwhelming "evidence" all of your vocal protestations of "it wasn't me!", "I didn't do it!" will count for nothing because THEY HAVE THE EVIDENCE AGAINST YOU FOR ALL TO SEE. And as they say; "seeing is believing".

The above is a miniscule example of what this administration is capable of. THEY HAVE THE INFORMATION ON ALL OF US AND THEY ARE MORE THAN WILLING AND CAPABLE OF MANIPULATING THAT INFORMATION ANY WAY THEY CHOOSE IN ORDER TO "ELIMINATE" ANYONE THEY DEEM "AN ENEMY OF OBOMINATION'S STATE" (Yes I am yelling because the situation is so dire.)

If anyone of us found ourselves placed in this situation we could proclaim our innocence until we were blue in the face and we would be convicted of the so-called "evidence" because it is there in black and white for all to see.

A great example of how devastating the manipulation of video and media could be in convicting any one of us despite our vocal protestations is to look at the murder case against Hernandez of the New England Patriots. Whether he did it or not, I do not know but he has already been deemed "guilty" because of a video purporting to show him with a gun. Is it genuine? is it real? No matter, we have all seen the photo from his own security system video because the POLICE released it so that it could be splashed on the front page of every news paper in order to "back up their case" and to demonstrate that they "have the evidence".

The big question is this: is it REAL or is it MANIPULATED Memorex? Could his security feed be independently accessed or "tapped" by someone and could that someone manipulate the blurry image to show him with a gun?

Who can tell anymore when those (once trusted alphabet soup) agencies, (now under the total domination and control of this nefarious regime) who have ACCESS to ALL of the audio, video, digital content and the wherewithal to manipulate it to fit their desired ends are the ones "releasing the evidence" for the judge, jury and the "low information" masses at large.

There was a time when the movies "Colossus: The Forbin Project", "Rising Sun" and "Enemy of the State", along with the TV show "Person of Interest" were Science fiction or fiction which made for an interesting and entertaining premise and food which made for a thoughtful discussion. But those days are dead and gone because the fiction they envisioned along with their dire predictions and consequences have become reality within our short lifetime.

One more thing, if "the powers that be" find it difficult to smear your good name and have you put in jail because they do not like what you are saying about them or "Dear Leader", they can always take complete control of your car while you are driving (as was demonstrated this past week by some grad students using a simple laptop) floor it and propel you headlong into a wall as you scream for you your life and frantically try to apply the brakes which those controlling the car have rendered inoperable... sounds familiar doesn't it? ...Na, couldn't be, he just had an "accident".

With new thermostats and other "helpful electronic devices" for your home connected to the Internet and able to be "controlled" by your phone (or by anyone else with the smarts and ability to do it) like video cameras, ovens, security systems etc... being foisted on the American public. "Accidents" in your home skillfully designed to kill you are now also becoming a reality as well. Tagline

Old news. This is why cell phones, even ones that are shut off, aren’t allowed in classified areas.

It’s possible they have a master key list and could have the loaded input that into the encryption program. Wouldn’t overly surprise me if they did. If that info got out though, people would truly start freaking out. At least you’d think so. I dunno though, all this stuff seems to not bother that many people that much.

They cannot remotely turn on your cellphone microphone if there is no battery in the device. Also, no battery prevents the network from locating your position by triangulation using network cellphone towers.

Of course, the downside is you cannot be called, texted, or twittered at any time of the day or night. Well, maybe that’s a downside.
