Couple Found Dead in Camper Near Santa Rosa Were Going to Colorado (NM)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | august 6, 2010 | ABQNews Staff

State Police are investigating as a double homicide the deaths of two people whose burned bodies were found in a burned-out camper near Santa Rosa, the state Department of Public Safety said Thursday.

Gary and Linda Haas' bodies was found by a rancher in a 32-foot travel trailer about on a ranch 10 miles west of Santa Rosa and three miles north of Interstate 40. Two well-groomed dogs were also found near the camper, according to a search warrant.

State Police used the contact information on the dog tags to contact the Haases' daughter, who said the dogs belonged to her parents, the court document says.

The couple often stayed in state parks on their trip, including an area near Santa Rosa, the daughter said.

She described the couple as "very self-sufficient" and said both had concealed-carry firearms licenses.

The couple's white Chevrolet pickup pulling the camper was found in Albuquerque through OnStar, but police said there were no video surveillance cameras nearby and no witnesses who could describe any occupant of the truck.

Unlikely, going the wrong direction. However, there are two murderers on the loose from Arizona, though they too would be unlikely to be heading back west toward Arizona. More likely someone who they may have stopped to help who got the drop on them. Or could have knocked on their trailer door and subdued them.

Terrible story for any family to have to endure and what that couple went through.

Repeated Lesson. Fight/flee, what ever it takes to not be removed from Crime Scene #1. Crime Scene #2 is not survivable.

Scared the crap out of me. My daughter and her boyfriend are in a camper and in that very area right now. They are over there from Maui. Prayers for this family in this tragic time.

This is sickening! In the 50’s we camped all over the west, sleeping in sleeping bags on the ground. It never occurred to us that someone might sneak up in the night and kill us. The world is a different place in only 60 years.

Not sure what you mean, but I think the best chance of surviving entails not going with anyone away from a populated area. In other words, if they are going to shoot me, I'd rather fight where some one might see it happen, instead of going with the criminal to some secluded place. That is what I would hope I would do.

My wife and I leave next Friday for a traveling camping trip. We tow an Airstream trailer. I had planned to stay in a few State campgrounds to say a few bucks... maybe not now.

I would have been armed anyway, but this will remind me to maintain situational awareness a bit more. Even though my dog is “well groomed”, he is a 2 year old German Shepherd dog that has become protective of both of us, so he should also help... at least be a good alarm.

This kind of nightmare takes some of the fun out of being an American anymore.

My the couple RIP.

That usually goes over people's heads. Crime Scene #2 is where the body(s) are found. #1 is where they were taken from.

There were Public Service Programs in the late 70's on how not to be a victim and to survive encounters with bad guys. Those are long gone.

Over the years, I have taken various teenagers (males) on a tour of a actual CS1 to CS2 where there are two crosses with the names of the boy & girl who were killed. They have to be educated on just how bad some people are.

Nasty brutal murder....

Much of the evidence, if any, will likely be located in their stolen truck, and all the video cameras along the way to Albuquerque, all the stores, fast food places and cameras where in the area where the truck was dumped.

I really hope they catch those responsible...This was really a nasty crime.

If this was in the middle of now where....How did the murderers get there? Was a second vehicle involved?
