Terrible story for any family to have to endure and what that couple went through.

Repeated Lesson. Fight/flee, what ever it takes to not be removed from Crime Scene #1. Crime Scene #2 is not survivable.

Not sure what you mean, but I think the best chance of surviving entails not going with anyone away from a populated area. In other words, if they are going to shoot me, I'd rather fight where some one might see it happen, instead of going with the criminal to some secluded place. That is what I would hope I would do.

Yup. When you’re out like that you have to be prepared to forcefully defend yourself. I recall the same thing has happened to older couples in campgrounds in Oregon a few times in the past. The motive is usually a drifter (a jail escapee or other wanted individual) looking to steal the folks’ vehicle and perhaps some cash to move some distance in a short amount of time. My wife and I like to camp in out of the way primitive campgrounds and usually we go in mid week when there is almost nobody else around. But anytime we’re out in the sticks I pack. So far we have not had occasion to do more than kindly suggest a time or to that we don’t wish to have any company.
