Tunnels under Cusco

Early chroniclers reported that by far the greatest amount of treasure in Cusco was in the Sun Temple (Koricancha). However, it disappeared before the conquistadors could get hold of it and melt it down. Despite the use of various forms of persuasion, the Spanish never found this horde.

A team of investigators from Spain, using modern technology of radar and software producing 3D images, have suggested that there are tunnels connecting the former Incan temples (over which colonial churches were built) to Sacsahuaman.

They have discovered the existence of huge tunnels over 5 metres deep under the Convent of Santo Domingo, which was built over the Koricancha. These are unlikely to have been built by the Spanish, as their catacombs were no more than 4 metres deep. On March 22, 2001, they accessed a crypt under an altar in the convent, which they think leads to the entrance of the main tunnel.

"Sacsahuaman", to those who've never been there, is pronounced similarly to "Sexy Woman"...

Isn't there supposed to be a chamber between the Sphinx's front "paws" as well?

Cusco is just a great place to visit. Many of the Inca walls are still intact and "modern" day buildings are using them. What a great place.......

I agree. I've never seen anything else like it in the world. There is a certain presence in the entire city and the people are very nice. I can't wait to go back.
