Rand Paul: I’ll win black voters to GOP

MILFORD, N.H. — Sen. Rand Paul claimed he’d be the Republican with the best chance of picking up black voters in the 2016 presidential campaign — and suggested a major scandal will soon threaten Democrat Hillary Clinton’s likely candidacy — during a stop here one day after announcing he’s running for the White House.

“I’ve tried to expand the Republican Party by taking the message to places Republicans haven’t gone,” Paul said yesterday when asked by the Herald whether he is the Tea Party candidate in the race. “I’ve spent the last several years going to historically black colleges, going to large major cities, going to inner city schools at a dozen cities ... going to the Urban League, talking to NAACP leaders.”

Paul wouldn’t say what separates him from the only other declared GOP candidate — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — but said his support goes far beyond just the Tea Party.

“What you’re seeing early on with polling is when you see me polled against Hillary Clinton in purple states and in some blue states, we do better than any other Republican. We believe that’s because we attract independent voters better than any other candidate,” he said.

No state, however, may be more important to the Paul campaign than New Hampshire, which was his first stop after announcing his candidacy in Louisville, Kentucky Tuesday.

“I do think we do need to win New Hampshire,” said Paul.

Paul walked in to a packed crowd at Milford Town Hall with the driving guitars of “Frankenstein” by The Edgar Winter Group blaring and chants of “President Paul!”(continued)

“Rand Paul: I’ll win black voters to GOP”

Same old bull spit!
What he’s really saying he will continue welfare as we know it, sec. 8, cell phones, food stamps etc. Rand Paul is a RINO who should not be trusted. Cruz is the man.

Leaders? Like JJ and Not-so-sharpton?? Those are not “leaders” they are race pimps..

While I do think the republicans could pull more of the black vote, Rands way of trying to do this won’t work.

The democrats are taking the black vote for granted. That will be their mistake.

RE :”One of the BIGGEST MISTAKES made by Republican candidates in recent decades is “fighting for the black vote”. They need to simply GIVE IT UP and instead fight for the WHITE VOTE (hence my tag line).”

That's funny, because I been posting here that when I listen to Levin (who was on Hannity last night) and Rush they sound like they are calling for getting more white over 50s to vote in POTUS elections, like today's voters or potential voters are the same as in 1984.

Romney won that group hands down. There is few left of them to maximize, they watch FNC and hate Obama.

The problem with that strategy is its a dying one.
Its the not whites who are coming here from other countries having lots of kids, its the others. (in fact certain groups of them like Indians and Koreans have much stronger belief in traditional marriage and families than white Americans do).

So some of these non-white groups will have to be won over or we will have the Mark Levin 20 state strategy.

The irony is that New Hampshire is 95% white.

Must be courting the McBama vote....

Wrong interpretation. From what I have heard, Rand Paul wants to reduce sentencing of NON-VIOLENT drug related crimes. A young black person caught with 2 oz of marijuana can get 20-30 years in prison. That makes me mad because my taxes have to support the perp. So long as the perp does not sell drugs, and committing no VIOLENT crimes, he should not be in prison for years and years. That does not help my pocket book, and it does not help the perp. He meets really bad dudes in prison, and can graduate into a real criminal when paroled.

I think entropy12 did a good job coming up with an interpretation of what Paul meant.

Thanks for the link to his speech. I had not heard or read it. That was a heck of a speech! If this one sentence is all you pulled out of it that you disagree with, well, it’s not much, IMO.

I didn't pull that one out of the air,
I was staying on topic.

You don't see that as being on topic? I'm not going to post his whole speech
and tickle an Elmo while giggling in the corner.

What the hell is wrong with you damn Paul-Bots.

The thread had to do with Rand Paul saying he could win black voter to the GOP. You answered a poster's comment about what would he promise blacks to get their vote by inferring that this one sentence in his speech said something that it did not.

You interpreted Rand's sentence: "I see an America where criminal justice is applied equally and any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed."

to mean this: Rand already said he would repeal the laws that makeup the crimes for blacks being in prison. I assume laws like Drugs. So dealers selling to kids will be set free.

I disagreed. I agreed with entropy12's comments as one plausible meaning of the sentence in his speech.

Is that explanation clear enough for you?

I am not a Paul-Bot, a Cruz-Bot, a Walker-Bot, etc.

On the other hand, you are a rude name-caller who does nothing to further your argument other than throw around accusations .....at least on this thread.

“Romney won that group hands down.”

No, he only “won” that group, and by a few points. He DID NOT win 75 to 89 percent of the white vote, which is how EVERY REPUBLICAN did in the South. And why did the Republicans do so well with whites in the South - because they TARGETED THEM. They apologized FOR NOTHING.

Yes, I GET IT, there are a lot of Hispanics and the percentage of whites is dropping - but is your point that we should move to the FAR LEFT so as to pick up some of these minority votes? If so, COUNT ME OUT. I live in Texas, where whites are BARELY A MAJORITY, but we kicked ass - because we targeted them. We gave them something to vote for.

...and by the way, we came VERY CLOSE to splitting the Hispanic vote right down the middle.

Wow, it takes someone who actually WORKS FOR A LIVING (installing cable) to understand my point. Thanks. You’re saying that we should do our best to help blacks (like with school vouchers), but should not PANDER to them, as others are saying.

THANK YOU!

“If they don’t go into the community, build up grassroots support and activism, nothing will ever change. It can’t be a top-down approach, it has to be from the bottom up.”

It’s VERY DIFFICULT to respond to a party that shows a pickup truck dragging a chain, which is what the Democrats did in 2000. We can try...but it would be A FIRST if our ideas could be identity-voting, and I mean WORLD-WIDE.

It’s next to hopeless. The BEST POLICY is to try to explain why are ideas are good - but NEVER pander, such as emptying our jails, as Rand Paul apparently wants to do.

Changing minds and voting habits won’t happen overnight. But it’s clear that what the party is doing (and has been for several decades) now simply isn’t working. At no point, however, do I advocate simply pandering or non-Conservative pitches (which is what Paul is doing).

I don’t think setting a goal of getting 25% of the Black vote is a fanciful notion. That may not seem like a whole lot, but getting that much would guarantee the Democrats get shut out of races in many states.

The only republicans who I think are crazy are those who want to borrow money from China to fight wars in the middle east. Those republicans have no clue how much our country is in debt to foreigners. That debt will not vanish by an executive order. It will be foisted on the necks of my children and your children.

Since there are no surpluses in the budget as far as the eye can see, NONE of the principle is getting paid, but the interest must be paid each year.

What is wrong with these boneheaded neocons who do not know history about how every one of the past superpowers met their demise by spending money they did not have. The Soviet Union was the last domino to fall. USSR tried to compete with Reagan’s America which was in good shape due to Reagan’s economic policies.

As a conservative, do you think Walker is the “most” conservative candidate we have for 2016?

Ok, so you disagree with mine and others' interpretation of Rand Paul's statement.
How do you perceive what he blatantly said?

“Since there are no surpluses in the budget as far as the eye can see, NONE of the principle is getting paid, but the interest must be paid each year.”

Now if RAND PAUL wasn’t doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to give us a DEMOCRAT MAJORITY then you might be on to something.

But when he calls Voter ID “Crazy”, demands that FELONS get to vote, and supports OPEN BORDERS, then I have trouble seeing just how he will get the budget balanced.

Yea, I AGREE. We run a MODERATE for president that leaves the base home and has NOTHING TO OFFER for minorities...we lose. I agree with that.

“I don’t think setting a goal of getting 25% of the Black vote is a fanciful notion. “

I don’t have a problem with setting a goal of 25%...but just EXACTLY HOW are we to achieve it without SPLITTING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN HALF. About the only way that I can see is to promote CONSERVATIVE VALUES and hope the minorities can GET IT. That does not happen with Romney/McCain/Paul...but it may happen with Cruz.

If not...well then we need to learn to win without them.
