Evidence that Pontius Pilate Converted to Christianity

While Pontius Pilate's wife, Claudia, has been glorified as a saint, what happened to Pontius Pilate himself? There are three writers from the Early Church who say he became a Christian. There is a similar tradition in Ethiopia, and sometimes there one can find icons of Pontius Pilate, together with his wife Claudia.

The fate of Pontius Pilate after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is disputed among historians. According to some, Pilate killed himself while in exile to Gallia. Others suggest that he was executed during the reign of Emperor Nero. According to legend, the bad omens accompanying the martyrdom of Christ continued to follow Pilate and his wife Claudia long after the death of the Saviour and caused them great grief until Pontius finally converted to Christianity under the influence of his spouse. According to popular apocryphal writings, complicity in the killing of Christ gave Pontius Pilate a guilty conscience that left him sleepless for many years and sent him looking for a way to wash away his iniquity.

[John 19:19-22] And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it. Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, “Change it from ‘The King of the Jews’ to ‘He said, I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate replied, “No, what I have written, I have written.”

[Romans 10:9] — “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Pilate confessed with his mouth (and wrote it down in three languages!) that Jesus is Lord (”King”).
Pilate was of course alive during the resurrection, and present for all of the Jewish drama around the crucifixion. He was a participant in the activities around the resurrection.
I am able to believe that Pontius Pilate confessed that Jesus was LORD and believed in his heart — knew — that Christ was risen from the dead. And, therefore, saved, as Paul set out in his letter to the Romans.
That’s not a definition of “saved”. The demons no doubt believe that Christ is risen too.
Romans 10:9 is MOST DEFINITELY a definition of “saved”.
That is Scripture, and it could not be simpler.
Whatever the demons may believe about the resurrection of CHRIST, they definitely do NOT take Christ as their Lord!
Are you Catholic?
Seems more likely it was meant to discourage rebellion. Recall some Jews wanted Jesus to use his influence to lead a rebellion against Rome.
Note that verse is future tense; add the context of Matthew 24:13.
There are lots of legends about what happened to Pilate, mostly because people were trying to fill in the holes as to what happened after he retired. The notion that he converted to Christianity and tried to convert the emperor apparently stems from Tertullian.
I don’t know about any of that; maybe it happened, maybe it didn’t. But like I said I can believe that possibly Pilate got saved out of all that occurred during the time in which GOD raised him up into his position. SOMEONE with Roman authority had to do the sentencing. Pilate was born for his time.
Everbody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to go now!
Except me. Having been there multiple times during NDE’s, I miss it beyond words of expression. The Love was so strong that coming back felt like my heart was ripped out.
There has not been one day since my first NDE over 35 years ago that I have not thought about it.
In October of 2023 I got to spend 9+ hours there again. The surgeon told me that I became agitated after surgery when they were pulling the ventilator at 4.5 hours and I fought them pulling the tubes. They pulled them anyway and I refused to start breathing, so they put them back in. Five hours later I returned.
I’m not here by my will.
Very interesting.
Like others have said, not ready to go and see for myself!
Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die.
It’s always a good thing when someone becomes a Christian. Let’s hope that he and his family did.
Yeah; Satan and demons believe who Christ is, i.e., God incarnate, and that He rose from the grave. But do they “confess with their mouth”? It appears that Pilate did, via the written word. With his spoken word he confirmed it. “Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.”
Romans 10:9-10 King James Version
“9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
“10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
“Everbody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to go now!”
When Dad was in the hospital with heart issues, he would get angry in the mornings when he woke up. He would look around and ask, “Why am I still here?” He did that for about a week before he actually went.
“You only die once. God isn’t giving tours of heaven.”
You have a heck of a lot to learn.
Don’t be surprised when it doesn’t work the way you think it does.
Thanks for posting that. Totally credible. I have never had an NDE, nevertheless sometimes my longing or groaning for heaven seems unusually intense and frustratingly unsatisfied, if that makes any sense.
