There are lots of legends about what happened to Pilate, mostly because people were trying to fill in the holes as to what happened after he retired. The notion that he converted to Christianity and tried to convert the emperor apparently stems from Tertullian.

I don’t know about any of that; maybe it happened, maybe it didn’t. But like I said I can believe that possibly Pilate got saved out of all that occurred during the time in which GOD raised him up into his position. SOMEONE with Roman authority had to do the sentencing. Pilate was born for his time.
