(Reuters) - The next archbishop of Canterbury is confident he will consecrate a female bishop, he said on Thursday, two days after the Church of England voted against allowing women to become bishops.
Bishops and clergy on Tuesday in the General Synod, the Church legislature, comfortably backed the change but lay members were four votes short of a two-thirds majority.
"Its clear that woman are going to be bishops in the Church of England," said Justin Welby, who will take over from Rowan Williams as the spiritual leader of the Anglican wing of world Christianity at the end of the year.
"It was a pretty grim day for the whole church. There is a lot to be done but I am absolutely confident that at some point I will consecrate a woman bishop," Welby said during a visit to promote religious reconciliation in Nigeria, which has the world's biggest mixed Christian-Muslim population.
Women already serve as Anglican bishops in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, but Anglican churches in many developing countries oppose any female clergy and are working together to shield themselves against such reforms.
The Church of England finds itself somewhere in the middle, struggling to reconcile the views of reformers and traditionalists. The measure cannot now be approved for at least five years.
Welby, an experienced conflict negotiator, drew the loudest applause on Tuesday when he urged members to compromise and vote for the measure, citing bloody conflicts in the Middle East and Africa as examples of what intractable differences can lead to.
He was in Nigeria to launch a program to strengthen ties between Christians and Muslims, being run by former British prime minister Tony Blair's foundation. Blair was also present.

So why bother to have the vote?
"Go ahead, woman. Eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge."
I know a guy who is a self-described Tory, and listening to his take on the matter was rather astounding. He talked about how the CoE needs to “modernize” and “get with the times” and not be “bigoted and reactionary”.
Of course, he is also an atheist and rarely has anything to say about matters of faith unless it’s something like this.
Rather sad that the many Tories have become like our Country-Club RINOs.

Does this mean the almost archbishop is suggesting that “intractability” between the “reformers and traditionalists” will lead to bloodshed in the church”. Is certainly looks like it.
The almost archbishop comes to the church from a business background and has not been a member of the clergy for very long and is still wet behind the ears as a bishop. Seems to me he needs to take some more time with his Bible.

I don’t belong to that sect, so I really do not give a damn, but when they make women Catholic Priests I will be going to underground real Catholic mass and skipping the lesbian mass.

The Leaders of these churches that are permissive of radical changes to their form of worship should look closely at the relevance of churches that ordain women. Men do not get involved in the churches. When men leave a church, it dies.
The C of E should concern itself with the fact that 26 Million people are SUPPOSED to be apart of the church, yet fewer than 5% darken a Church Doorstep every week (Around One Million) and less than 10% go once a month to church services. Around 1.7 Million go to services a month.
Their problem isn't being uninclusive. It is TOO permissive.
That is why he was made Archbishop. They were mocking the more qualified bishops as well as apostolic tradition.
God doesn’t compromise. Unfortunately, too many will find that out too late.

what is needed is for the Africans etc. to leave, form their own Church if needed.
There won’t be priestess. The Pope closed the book firmly and with finality — he said that making a decision on this is beyond the rights of any Pope — ergo, no Pope can change this in any possible way. There will always be only priests.
Matters of faith and morals should not be subject to majority vote, or even super-majority as in this instance.
They should not be voted upon at all.
Thankfully, the laity understand Scripture and Holy Tradition far better than their Seminary-educated counterparts.
“So why bother to have the vote?”
Go ahead. Take the red pill.
Then you’ll understand.
I agree with your opinion.
The only valid bishops are Catholic bishops. An unbroken line of succession from Jesus’ apostles. When protestants broke away from the one true Christian church, they forfeited their right to have bishops ordained through Holy Orders. The same is true for all faiths that are separated from the Catholic Church. There is a reaon why anglicans are becoming members of the Catholic Church by the thousands each and every day. The truth is the reason, and the truth is the Catholic Church.
