Word of 'Asherah' was nearly edited out of the Bible, researcher concludes
God had a wife, Asherah, whom the Book of Kings suggests was worshipped alongside Yahweh in his temple in Israel, according to an Oxford scholar.
In 1967, Raphael Patai was the first historian to mention that the ancient Israelites worshipped both Yahweh and Asherah. The theory has gained new prominence because of the research of Francesca Stavrakopoulou, who began her work at Oxford and is now a senior lecturer in the department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter.
Information presented in Stavrakopoulou's books, lectures and journal papers has become the basis of a three-part documentary series, now airing in Europe, where she discusses the Yahweh-Asherah connection.

Given the source (Discovery & NBC), we're probably lucky that the author isn't positing "homosexual life partner" instead of a wife.
Is this from Mormon infiltrators?
IBPD
What a bunch of baloney... The heathen are commenting on the Bible again...
No. Worse. British Academics from Oxford.
oh gosh, not this crap again
why are people always trying to rewrite religion?
Coming soon to a movie theater near you, no doubt.
Why post?
“why are people always trying to rewrite religion?”
To control people and get their wealth and power, of course.
These guys are not able to understand that Asherah references in the temple were put there by apostate idol-worshippers. Really pathetic journalism and scholarship.
Many israelites worshipped false gods. It’s not a big secret.
They still knew the one true God.
This is nothing more than bait plus they get the added bonus of paying back the LDS for their involvement in Prop 8 in California.
"Yeah, tell me about it."
Signed,
Moses
I guess this makes Baal, who they also worshipped some times, was God’s gay lover?
You don't think it's important to understand what "religious" theories are being forwarded by mainstream (and not insignificant) media outlets?
There's a cultural war that is taking place, and like most wars, those with the best intelligence, win. Not understanding or ignoring some of the fallacies that are being propagated by secular media outlets about religion - and in this instance monotheism itself - doesn't serve any purpose.
Plenty of accounts of Israeli’s worshiping Baal and other idols. Just because events are related in the Bible does not mean God approves of them.
There is one God, period. He has no wife (another God), because He Himself has said so. God does not lie.
“Asherah known across the ancient Near East by various other names, such as Astarte and Istar was “an important deity, one who was both mighty and nurturing,” Wright continued.”
Great. Now a bunch of 60 year old women shamans in Santa Fe will discover their inner Asherah, or some such nonsense.
This item is plain, unadulterated anti-God crapism!
