Ky. Governor stripped of power to fill Senate vacancies under proposed bill (should the turtle resign or croak)

A state House committee advanced a bill to fully strip the Kentucky governor’s power to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy, just a day after McConnell announced he will step down from his Senate leadership position.

A Kentucky House committee advanced a bill Thursday to fully strip the Democratic governor’s power to fill a vacancy in the state’s U.S. Senate seat — one day after Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell announced he will step down from his leadership role this year.

The Republican-dominated state legislature had already passed a law in 2021 to shift such power away from the governor. Previously, the governor had the sole power to appoint someone to fill a Senate vacancy, but the new law requires the governor to choose from three nominees selected by the party of the senator leaving office, in advance of a special election.

I don’t think this will survive a court challenge. If we really want this there will need to be an amendment to Kentucky’s constitution.

So the Kentucky legislature has a supermajority so could override a veto of the bill.

I know. Have you seen him lately? MUCH more frail than Slow Joe. He’s gone on complete vapor lock at the podium a few times. Cross your fingers and hope this gets done.

I don’t want Beshear to have this authority but difficult to believe this is constitutional given the constitution says it is the governor’s authority.

They may be able to get by with requiring a special election within a shortened period of time to fill the remainder of the term, however, and that pass constitutional muster.

Time to repeal the 17th Amendment and return to the original Constitution in selecting senators.

What’s going with McConnell health wise? He makes Biden look vigorous and well. Do you think he’ll last out the term? Appearance wise, three years looks like a long shot for him.

Get around the 17th Amendment... and get the Governor out of the decision and appointment. But the same governor has to sign this, and surely won’t unless it is veto proof and passed w/out the OK of the gov. Beshears a demo-rat.

Sorry but this kinda bill will backfire on conservatives when our people are in office. Better for the people to decide. Then the fault lays solely upon the voters for making crappy decisions.
Too many “cut outs” for politicians to deny responsibility for not putting our policies in action
