Large numbers of Americans want a strong, rough, anti-democratic leader
The Conversation ^ | 12/30/2023 | by Tarah Williams, Andrew Bloeser, and Brian Harward

It might be comforting to think that American democracy has made it past the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. But our research shows that a wide range of the American people, of all political stripes, seek leaders who are fundamentally anti-democratic.

It’s true that many who participated in the insurrection are facing consequences, including prison time. Many candidates for state office who falsely claimed that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election lost their races. And the congressional committee investigating the insurrection voted to refer Trump to the Department of Justice for criminal charges.

But more than 100 members of Congress who objected to the results of a free and fair election won their reelection campaigns. And at least seven people who attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 have been elected to state legislatures and two have been elected to Congress.

“Really, Laz, you can’t go throwing Commies out of helicopters.” Oh, man. Do you ever tire of people telling you can’t do

I know, right? It's like, everyone likes to spoil a good time!

Happy New Year, and keep pitchin' them out!

You do have to be a little circumspect. Like I got a call from a neighbor, “Hey, Billy, you get your little ass over here and get this thing out of my Begonia patch! Do you think we don’t know who did it?” Didn’t allow for the wind. Happy New Year right back atcha!

Didn’t allow for the wind.

True that. I understand in the 1940's, Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York, designed some really great bomb-sights that you could also use for dropping communists. They took the wind-drift into account pretty well! You could literally land a commie on the 50 yard line of any major football stadium!

You just don't want to look at the evidence.

Happy New Year.

Sorry, don’t have a ton of time to educate you. Do some homework on how the J6 prisoners have been treated. Really dig in. You’ll find it eye-opening.

Industrial-strength horse blinders on that one.

No. I don’t want ANY ‘leaders’. I don’t need to be lead. Anyone in elected office should be considered an employee. Nothing more.

Remember that when the person in elected office is named "Donald Trump".

It doesn’t matter who is in office, or how high the office. They are there at the will of the people to serve, and are our employees.

“Yeah, apart from the thousands of Chileans tortured for disagreeing with their government.”

See, I'm okay with that, so long as we are on top.

It never works out that way. Give the bullies a little bit of power and you end up with tyranny.

Just go back to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Founding Fathers understood human nature and set things up right.

You guys. (chuckles)

You simply cannot tell when someone is employing dark humor.

I would have thought that my exchange will Billthedrill would have clued you in.

One thing that is NOT dark humor, is that there ARE examples of torture in America these days. The behavior of the authorities as regards the J6 prisoners cannot be described as anything less than torture.

Sorry, I have better things to do with my time than to revisit old threads unless it's to answer something directed to me.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So far I haven't seen a single link from either you or kiryandil. Nada. Zilch.

That Stalin meme is my favorite bit of dark humor.

With that said, it’s often impossible to identify satire or sarcasm any more, at least since the Babylon Bee. (Tom Lehrer said decades ago that satire died when Henry Kissinger got the Nobel Peace Prize. Lehrer is a liberal, but he was right on this.)

You may not have meant it to be taken seriously, but there are parts of what used to be conservativism that are trending towards authoritarianism, and it doesn’t take much for things like that to catch on.

Look how the left has been taken over by wokism. I don’t want to see something comparable happen on the right.

I see what you’re saying but I think it would be a massive mistake to allow our enemies’ reactions to determine our terms of discourse. There has been far too much of that.
