Walt Disney DIS –2.97% stock was nearing a one-year low on Monday morning as the entertainment company’s recent slide continued. Walt Disney stock (ticker: DIS) was down 1.5% to $87.32, while the S&P 500 SPX +0.29% index was up 0.2%.
Disney was the second-worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.19% , which was up 0.1%. Only Verizon Communications VZ –4.85% (VZ), down 3.2%, had fallen more. Disney shares are up just 3.7% from their 52-week closing low of $84.17 on Dec. 28.
If the stock falls below $83.83, it would mark Disney’s lowest close since 2014. Shares have struggled in recent months as investors worried about the volatile media landscape, the Hollywood writers and actors strikes, and the near-term growth prospects of Disney’s theme-park business. Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger last week received a contract extension through 2026. He had led the company from 2005 through 2020 and rejoined Disney when it fired his successor Bob Chapek in November.
The company said last month that Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy was stepping down, adding to recent turnover. Disney has rolled out 7,000 job cuts this year.

Definitely check back again at end of year. Disney is on the hook to buy Comcast's share of Hulu in early 2024. The formula isn't totally public, but it looks like the minimum price Disney must pay for the full share is $9.2 billion, maybe a lot more if Comcast plays hardball - which they will.
So where is Disney going to come up with $9 billion, or more? At present, its current assets vs. current liabilities are about 1:1, which is OK, but it also has $45 billion in long-term debt. It can't afford to drain all its cash to buy Hulu, especially as its movies are losing money and its park business is slowing. So it will likely need to load-up on expensive debt.

No business that makes it their business to insult the values of 90% of their potential audience can long endure.

They could issue more stock to raise cash but that will lower the market price per share. Won’t help them get off their low.

One Disney executive boasted about her “not-at-all-secret gay agenda” and efforts at “adding queerness to” children’s programming, in leaked audio published by investigative journalist Chris Rufo on Tuesday.
“Our leadership over there has been so welcoming to my, like, not-at-all-secret gay agenda,” said Latoya Raveneau, an executive producer for Disney Television Animation. “I was just, wherever I could, just basically adding queerness … No one would stop me and no one was trying to stop me.”
