The scramble to airlift tens of thousands of foreign nationals and Afghan allies from Kabul entered a frantic new stage today - with military chiefs admitting they can only continue as long as the Taliban allows it.
As desperate British and US citizens, and allies who helped Western forces during the two-decade intervention, try to flee reprisals, armed guards from the Islamist regime have surrounded the capital's airport and seized control of all access points.
Underlining the abject humiliation of the West, the Taliban's political chief Mullah Baradar arrived in Kandahar province on Tuesday after 20 years of exile as the group held its first press conference, confirming their grip on power and insisting it would respect women's rights under Islamic law.
Although the atmosphere is less chaotic inside the perimeter than the extraordinary scenes yesterday - when several people plummeted to their deaths after clinging to departing planes and another was crushed to death in landing gear - witnesses on the ground revealed that there is still carnage outside.
Streams of people, some clutching immigration documents, have been queuing under the guns of armed Taliban as Apache helicopters buzzed through the air. Former Royal Marine commando Paul 'Pen' Farthing, who runs an animal sanctuary in Kabul, warned that they were being told to come to the airport but left at the mercy of crowds and Taliban forces who have it under siege.
The clearly distraught veteran, who said he had been separated from his wife, said British military needed to go outside the perimeter and 'rescue some of the people they have been sent to get'. 'People are going to die,' he insisted. (story continues at link)

Trump set the Sept 11 withdrawal date. That has been the end date for a while now. Nothing new there.
Custer Hill.
Whomever gave up Bagram must be outed and punished.
The Russian Army left Afghan beat and hooked on drugs. I don’t think Russia is a fan. Our military is trash. Two SF teams led the Northern Allian and Karzai’s men to victory and took Kabul in 100-120 days. We saw the invasion of Iraq on TV. Very ill trained US.
“...insisting it would respect women’s rights under Islamic law.”
Not very damned likely.
Lol. I can always spot a daily mail headline a mile away.
It comes as Royal Navy Vice Admiral Sir Ben Key, who is organizing the RAF evacuation from Permanent Joint HQ in Northwood, admitted to Sky News that people wanting to be evacuated would have to rely on the Taliban letting them through.
‘Much of that journey is for them to undertake,’ he said.
and there it is...
These thousands who are being brought to America....are they being tested for Covid? Why don’t we hear of any cases in Afghanistan?
Bagram was not just an airport. It was a hardened airbase many many kinds of planes and helicopters and weapons. Bagram also had housing for thousands of troops and a hardened perimeter.
Do the people supposedly explaining the difference between what Biden has done and what Trump planned to do even know this? Maybe they are really just more examples of the complicit party in addition to the stupid party.
Trump wanted everybody out by May 1. And that date is significant! The Taliban would often start their summer offensives in mid-May. So the May 1 date would be before any summer offensive could be organized.
Smart thinking by Trump. Man, but we need him now more than ever.
This whole fiasco makes me wonder if Obama, in 8 years, lead Biden to become a Muslim.
This all went warp speed when our troops under orders bugged out of the air base without letting our allies know. No foreign government will trust us for the next 3 years.
He’s not only screwed our people but all the people from our allies, Australia, UK, etc....none of them have thet power to go and get them....and I’m not sure we do eiher.
Bagram was not just an airport. It was a hardened airbase many many kinds of planes and helicopters and weapons. Bagram also had housing for thousands of troops and a hardened perimeter.
+1 This should have been the last base to clear out. Whoever made the decision to abandon our military equipment/supplies needs to be hanged. This was an intentional act meant to brace up the Taliban. Jarret or Hussien? It sure wasn't Biden.
This change in date plus abandoning Bagram airbase without notice to Afghan government or military several weeks before the evacuation are the two biggest blunders Biden has made. I do not know why politicians and media supposedly on our side do not mention these two aspects of the bungled evacuation.
And no matter what, at this point, Biden couldn’t and wouldn’t send American troops back into Kabul - PERIOD!
He would need more than the two faces he already has to handle all that “egg”!
Nope, if things turn south for people still in Afghanistan, they will be left for dead and Democrats will just start planning for 2028!
It’s not like they actually give a dang about those people or Americans in general, anyway.
1. They are not on our side.
2. It was intentional to help supply the Taliban. Treason.
That is why I call the republican party the complicit party instead of the stupid party.
It's like Dunkirk, except most of the stranded are going to be beheaded.
The Taliban did release 5000 prisoners who were held in Bagram Airbase after we simply abandoned it. Maybe Biden will think ….. what difference will it make if we release a few more from Guantánamo. I hope not.
