As we head in to the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in North Carolina, social distancing has become absolutely necessary to reduce exposure for everyone.
Many stores that are still open have started announcing new measures this week for tightening social distancing requirements.
Harris Teeter has announced that they will be implementing customer capacity limits at all stores to further protect associates and shoppers.
According to their press release, "Beginning April 8, Harris Teeter will limit the number of customers to 50% of building code capacity to further support physical distancing in its stores. Store associates will monitor the number of customers to ensure the capacity limit is maintained."
The move comes as Gov. Roy Cooper weighs options for new social distancing requirements for retailers that could force stores like Harris Teeter to limit their capacity even more.

Jason Kierstead, store manager at Carlie Cs in Garner, says theyve implemented several safety precautions but there is no limit to the number of shoppers allowed into the store.
I know theres been some chatter about that, so, if they come out and say youre going to have to limit them thats what well do, said Kierstead.
He worries limiting customer capacity could lead to longer lines at a time of unprecedented demand.
Kierstead has added 15 new employees to his staff to handle the increase in business.
The work is here. There is plenty to do, said Ronnie Whitaker, who got laid off three weeks ago as a restaurant host. "Im enjoying it so far. I dont know where its going to carry me. Ive already retired, but this may be my next job.
Carlie Cs says they have hired an additional 250 employees and there are still openings at all 25 locations in North Carolina, including four in the Triangle.
Everybody is just very appreciative just to keep the check coming in, said Kierstead. Even though theyve talked about a stimulus check and unemployment, a lot of people want to keep working.
They need to goto 'one way only' aisles. You've got workers trying to stock, you've got pickup people trying to pull items, you've got customers still dragging three generations into the store and they're all trying to be on the same aisle. It's madness.
Just got home from a cat food run. Go 1 hour before closing, few people, no lines. Plexiglass screens are new.
I don’t look forward to having to stand in line to get into the grocery store. In fact, I can’t stand for any length of time anyway. Will have to bring my walker (usually just use a cane) so can sit while I wait.
And then there is delivery of groceries. That is my probable solution although I understand deliveries are delayed by several days in our area.
Our local grocery store, Schnucks, has one-way in and out from the store. Only one person per family/cart is allowed. All store workers are masked.
“It’s madness.”
It’s madness alright, but not for the reason you’re thinking.
In our Costco, each person must have a shopping cart. If it is a husband and wife and two kids, the husband takes a cart and one child and the wife takes a cart with the other. They are treated as two separate units and only go through when two separate people leave he store. All carts are wiped down with sanitizer as they are taken into the store.
Our local Publix has implemented one way aisles. Honestly closing so many small businesses was a mistake. It is much easier to limit the number of customers and sanitize the smaller square footage of those spaces. Those smaller stores that usually don’t stock essentials could have probably started doing so even if it was temporary.
The only way to do it is to immerse each customer in a vat of bleach before and after leaving the store. There have been 63 deaths of the Chinese flu in North Carolina since they started keeping count. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
It wouldn’t surprise me if some states shut grocery stores down.
I know that’s insane but some people are having that conversation. A reporter ask Trump about shutting down the grocery stores.
Shutting down grocery stores would probably start the party. I cannot see how that doesn’t turn into riots.
They can put directional arrows on the floor, like they do at IKEA.
I also think there is a clever dimension to these rules/set up: good customers will put up with it, and whiners will go elsewhere. It's a perfect arrangement.
That's a good idea.
We’ve been limiting access to stores in Spain since the 3rd week of March and it’s worked out well. No food shortages. Plenty of toilet paper. People wait in line outside the store and a security guard acts as traffic warden. When you go in you put on those single use gloves like they keep in the produce aisle and rub hand sanitizer the store provides on the gloves. No families or couples, one shopper at a time. You wander the aisles at will but people naturally avoid each other as they shop around. The cashiers have plexiglass screens that offer some protection plus now most people are wearing masks. Most masks are homemade since they ran out of them right away. It’s very orderly and no new cases of ChiCom Flu have been reported in our town.
walmart today was a madhouse- still empty shelves, still people crammed into isles looking for items- went into one isle that was clear of people got 1/2 way- then blocked in on both ends- had top squeeze my way out-
The food and cleaning sections are just wiped out of stuff- still- toilet paper you might as well forget- if you aren’t there when the clerks roll out the pallets with the paper, you aren’t getting any- it’s gone before they even hit the shelves- after all these weeks, people are still panic buying-
And the worst part is- EVERYONE goes there because they are bored of sitting at home- it’s insane- there’s no such thing as social distancing in walmarts- some of the older folks tried- but nope- the younger generation just wouldn’t allow it- the isles were just crammed with people-
Will be shocking if i didn’t get the virus- now i get to wait 5-8 days to see if I get a fever or not- swell- just wanted some food for dinner- and a few basics- now i gotta wonder if someone had the virus- not too many cases yet in my neck of the woods- but more and more are getting it- likely getting it at walmarts Arggh-
Been weeks- no things like lysol- hand sanitizer, bleach, etc- no rice, flour, noodles (although spaghetti finally filled the shelves-) meat shelves were practically empty still-
How many weeks has it been now? it’s insane- people just aren’t letting up on panic buying-
[[The cashiers have plexiglass screens that offer some protection plus now most people are wearing masks. ]]
I didn’t see one cashier wearing masks, or gloves here in us store— and they don’t have any glass between them and customers- (although Our postal office has clear plastic sheet at the window that they can slide packages under- )
I think my town is about to see a steep incline in cases because of it, and because only about less than 1/4 of shoppers do the social distancing and wear ppe stuff- -
There is social distancing inside over at the nearest city Walmart.
But there is a crowd milling around waiting to be allowed into the store.
if you have a walmart nearby- they do pickup service too- but you can’t buy perishable stuff like meats, ice cream, fruits and veggies etc- mostly just canned junk- and stuff like noodles and boxed foods that have long shelf lives-
I haven;t used it yet- because the only time i buy stuff is when we need more perishable food- our long shelf life stuff is all set for a little while- as it always is, but we like cooking fresh when we can-
A large size Circle K is at 10.
