Empty freezers. Cleaned out shelves. Aisles totally empty, as if it were a going out of business sale. The chicken thighs, the frozen broccoli, the toilet paper are all feared missing.
Its slim pickings these days at supermarkets and convenience stores across the region as people are jamming into aisles to stock up on food, household goods, and cleaning supplies amid rising concerns theyll be forced to self-quarantine for an extended period of time. As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread, industry experts promise that the virus wont lead to a break in the food supply chain -- but it was clear in busy groceries Friday that many shoppers would rather be safe than sorry.
Is this it? The end? Donna Knowles asked without irony as she became the 26th person in a line that stretched from the cashier deep into the bakery section at the Market Basket in Gloucester early Friday afternoon.
"I just came in to grab a few things, hoping to make a few dinners before I go to work,'' she said, sizing up the line. "I dont think thats going to happen.''
"The only way youre getting any water is if you go down to the ocean and boil it,'' Mike Francis called out to another customer in a different corner of the store as he stocked chips in the snack aisle.
"Its worse than a blizzard, its worse than pre-Thanksgiving,'' Francis, a distributor for Utz snacks, told a reporter. "Ive never seen anything like this. And its like this in every store.

Asking for a friend. Is there any cremora or cottage cheese still available out there? Or K-cups. Need some K-cups.
At least they are paying for the stuff. For now anyhow.
Sounds like a good time to diet.
Amazon seems to have a full selection of Kcups.
paid mostly with credit cards....
the return lines will be epic soon.
Hows about a pat on the back to those of us who were already prepared and weren’t/aren’t out buying supplies?
No get out and support your local restaurants. They need the business.
Went to Costco, place was packed with TP and all their normal stuff, same thing with Fred Meyer.
I figured out how to score some Coke in the house by putting 10 bucks of gas in the car and buying a couple of 1 Liter bottles at a corner Mobil. Tried to score tomatoes at a gourmet open market near my house no luck but bought two empanadas instead. Then went to second-run grocery store around the corner from my house scored limes tomatoes cilanto to complement my homemade tortillas & pulled pork tacos. No problemo!
Avoid major chains.
LOL! There’s a fullfilment warehouse a mile from me. If it were nanfrancrisco I could just walk in and take whatever I wanted.
Good point. I haven’t heard any reports of looting (other than the normal background ‘hood activity at convenience stores).
Never seen anything like it..my mom went to Trader Joes yesterday because well, had no choice, had to buy a few things, hardly anything on the shelf, she got some milk and bread but that is basically it, she had gloves on and a mask for protection, they didnt even have the canned salmon she always gets, its gone they usually always have it in stock..people are NUTS..My sister in law’s brother lives in San Diego, he ordered toilet paper on amazon, they left it on his doorstep and someone stole it
I went to Kroger to buy milk, not tp or water or cleaning supplies, just milk. All of it was gone. I tried Sam’s and Aldi - same story. Who the heck is hoarding milk?
Idiot store should be limiting how many of what you can buy. They do it all the time.
That would make a lot more sense, but of course, common sense is the first thing that is “off the shelves” in a panic.
This is not the Black Death and the damage this panic is causing to our economy and people’s livelihoods is going to be serious and potentially disastrous.
When this subsides the stores will be like ghost towns.
They will only be selling fresh veggies, milk, breads, etc.
It will be interesting to see what the sales will be like for July 4th.
.
Is there a storm coming or something?
If shipping is stopped, and the stores don’t get restocked, I wonder what it will be like in a couple weeks, or longer if this continues.
Wouldn’t want to be in or near the cities where people don’t know how to provide for themselves. Could get interesting.
Saying prayers and hoping for the best possible outcome, for everyone.
July 4th? We’ll all be DEAD by then!
